Curious about Skenes' future? ... Skenes is a Cy Young winner on a franchise with a small-market payroll. Expect either a high-end 1-year settlement or a team push for an early extension. $7.2M seems low if he qualifies for Super Two, since top first-year arb salaries have been above $8M for elite performers (Soto’s 2022 record was $8.5M). His number could come in higher than $7.2M. Possible Outcomes 1. Settle on a 1-year deal (most likely). Over 90% of arb cases settle before a hearing. The final number usually lands near the midpoint of the two filed figures, or at one side’s number. 2. Settle on a multi-year deal. This could buy out all arb years (2027-2030) or run through free agency. Teams use arb as a lever to lock in cost certainty, and a player with a Cy Young award has real leverage to demand more than the standard arb scale. 3. Go to a hearing. Both sides file figures in mid-January and the hearing is in February. A three-person panel picks one number or the other, with no splitting the difference. - Skenes wins: he gets his filed number. - Team wins: he gets the team’s number. - Panels weigh the player’s own stats and awards, plus comparable players’ salaries. They ignore the team’s finances and the player’s contract negotiations. 4. Non-tender (effectively zero chance). If the team doesn’t tender a contract by the deadline (late November), he becomes a free agent. For a Cy Young-caliber pitcher at about $7M, that would be a franchise-level mistake. 5. Trade. Teams sometimes move players before they get expensive. His arb salary transfers with him, and the acquiring team has the same tender-or-release decision. 6. Extension before arb. The team can sign him to a long-term deal before filing deadlines, which sidesteps arb entirely.
