The politicians “hurtling us back toward the Stone Age” need to get out more.
In Paris, bikes account for 11.2% of trips within the city; cars, just 4.3%. In London, cycling is up 43% since 2019.
It's possible to transform mobility in a city in just one decade. And it is a proven way to unclog roads.
But alas, for now we take two steps back.

Doctors for Safe Cycling - you know, the people who treat the consequences of unsafe streets in the ER - gathered in Toronto today to protest provincial interference in our street infrastructure.
Spending $43 million to make our streets less safe will put even more pressure on our ERs. They know it.

Bikes can move many people while taking up very little space.
Cars move very few people in relation to the space they take up.
So in cities where space is at a premium, which one actually causes congestion?
My husband works downtown and regularly uses BikeShare to get to work.
Maybe Brad can share a map of how someone would get from Beaches-East York to Bay and Front via ravines and hydro corridors. 😂 😂
Toronto already has the space to build a connected cycling network, through our ravines and hydro corridors.
Let's build it and maintain it year-round. So we can give our residents bike lanes that work and less congestion for drivers.

There were 63 million trips by bike in Toronto in 2025.
If you think bike lanes cause congestion, wait until you see the congestion bikes cause without bike lanes.
A bike lane on my daily commute is now being dangerously removed. So I, too, will take the traffic lane, as I am entitled to do.
A remarkably stupid situation.

The harbour didn’t get saved by engineers, it was saved by people who kept showing up for it. open.substack.com/pub/waterk…
