Went on @CNN on @wolfblitzer's show - drew on my research for our @ERC_Research Gulag Echoes project on the Russian penal system at @Aleksanteri_UH @helsinkiuni to talk about what Brittney Griner is facing in her Mordovian women's prison. edition.cnn.com/videos/tv/20…
We've had the honor of working with Mikhaylo Mykhailo Romanov of the Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group. In a new blog post he describes prisoners who found themselves on Russian-occupied territories, which were then liberated by the Ukrainian army.

Do I know any oncologists working in Australia, or someone who could point me to one they know personally? I have a very important question and would greatly appreciate any leads. – at Helsinki, Finland
The wonderful @Aleksanteri_UH hosts very comfortable visiting fellowships in Helsinki, the deadline for next academic year is 12 February. helsinki.fi/en/aleksanteri-i…
My comments for @guardian on Russian prison conditions theguardian.com/world/2022/n…
Griner is in Russia’s harshest penal region, Mordovia. Prisoners say you haven’t really experienced Russian prison unless you’ve been there. The village she’s in was built as a Soviet prison camp town in 1931. Talking about it tonight on @CNN with @BrianToddCNN on @wolfblitzer. – at Helsinki, Finland
My interview for @TIME on Brittney Griner's travails in the Russian penal system, based on three years of research on race, ethnicity, and class in Russian prisons.
Brittney Griner is being transferred to a Russian penal colony — settlements known for torture, poor hygiene, and lack of medical assistance ti.me/3UmDr8B
My comments for @TIME on what Brittney Griner could face in the coming weeks and months as she travels to the Russian penal colony where she'll be serving her sentence.
“You’re in this state of limbo between one detention institution and another, and your lawyers and your relatives don’t really know where you are.” @OZeveleva tells me of the deliberately drawn-out transfer process to a Russian penal colony known as etap. time.com/6231783/what-is-rus…

In a recent guest essay for Meduza, @OZeveleva examined how food is used to punish prison inmates in Russia. meduza.io/en/feature/2022/08…
Was interviewed for this @VICENews piece about what might await Brittney Griner in a Russian prison, and how race and other identities play out in power games behind bars. Thanks @theloniusly! – at Helsinki, Finland
It's been called a Russian "concentration camp" and is notorious for abuses. It's also where Brittney Griner will serve her nine-and-a-half-year sentence.

Russia has no shortage of narratives about prison, from 19th-century revolutionaries to Solzhenitsyn & Navalny. In this guest essay, political sociologist @ozeveleva explains how their experiences with food in prison are part of another outrageous story. meduza.io/en/feature/2022/08…
I’ve been off Twitter lately as I re-learn to think and write in the context of what’s happening. But here’s a small thing I wrote as I grapple with all this - about use of prisons in Russia to silence the anti-war movement, and the things we learn about prisons in the process. – at Helsinki, Finland

Beyond the fog of war, a knowledge iron curtain has descended across the continent. The silences, filters, and risks shaping Russia commentary today are unlike anything we've seen over the past years. Russia knowledge in the West was already patchy and selective - now it's dire.
On Russia analysis: I just want to remind everyone that an unprecedented number of experts from Russia/on Russia have gone quiet or silent because describing current events for what they are puts them and their families at risk. Those commenting now are either very brave or safe.

Never thought it'd come to this, but I did have to leave Russia, crossing the border on foot in the middle of the night, with my panic-packed bags on my back and my dog in tow. Felt a massive door slam shut behind my back. Barely had enough time to call my parents. Crazy times.
