I think the biggest problem is Mateer, but Arbuckle did bring him from Washington State, so he should know that the guy can't read a defense to save his life. Receivers are frequently schemed open for easy gains, and they don't get hit. But they also can't run the ball. I don't think Venables is a 1-for-1 muschamp type. But I do think that some defensive coaches conduct practice in a way that doesn't allow offense to develop and thrive. It makes me wonder a little bit, but I'm not ready to go there yet.

I don't know if OU can win any meaningful games with Mateer playing like that. The offensive line wasn't a disaster, but it wasn't good either. And outside of Rocky Beers, they kind of looked like the same offense that Venables criticized for not being physical enough.
