I was honoured to moderate the handover of ParliMeter with @OUTASA. I’m particularly proud because I was there a year ago when this incredible tool was first unveiled, and it has been wonderful to see what it has become in just a year. Better parliamentary oversight starts with better access to information. Please use ParliMeter. It allows ordinary South Africans to track what our parliamentarians are doing, follow bills through Parliament, and better understand what is actually happening behind the political headlines. A good example is the much discussed coalition bill. Politicians have been talking about coalition legislation throughout the year, and from the public conversation you could easily assume that legislation was imminent and likely to be in place before the 4 November elections. Yet, as of last week, it had only been tabled at one meeting. I suspected it was unlikely to be finalised before the elections, but rather than relying on political commentary, I used ParliMeter to track its actual progress particularly because, through our work at @gwc_za , we needed to know whether additional public education around the legislation might be necessary. That is the value of accessible parliamentary information: it allows citizens to separate political rhetoric from what is actually happening in our democratic institutions. The next chapter of ParliMeter has now been handed over to @PMG_SA and @OpenUp. Together, they are making it easier for South Africans to track parliamentary activity, support evidence based oversight and strengthen democratic accountability. Because an informed public is essential to accountable government. And on a lighter note, the parliamentary photographer also managed to get some lovely pictures of @MolotoMothapo and me. He was telling me the craziest political theory at the time hence my expression 😊 @wayneduv #ParliMeter #Accountability #OpenGovernance #Democracy #Parliament #ActiveCitizenship

Well done to the IEC for standing their ground on this issue. How does the ANC expect the public to continue to trust them to manage the country, when they struggle to manage their own party’s affairs.

Outa CEO Wayne Duvenage says Parliament’s decision to reopen nominations for the Phala Phala impeachment committee’s evidence leader reflects the need for an independent and credible appointment. Is this going to adversely affect municipal finance or bolster it? Getting money from road fines is a better way of bringing in cash than privatised toll roads. I could be wrong. @OUTASA Aarto rolls out as Salga’s court challenge falls short businessday.co.za/motoring/2…
