My husband was actively involved in our children's elementary school and become quite close to several teachers and the principal and ap. He learned so much about how they craft which kids are in whose class. I had no idea. Now we know why our kids never had the same teacher.
School districts are starving for cash. Revenue gaps happen, sure, but the reality is that districts often starve themselves. Between crushing pension legacy costs, labor contracts signed for peace rather than fiscal reality, and treating a one-time COVID windfall like a slush fund for recurring payroll, the money gets swallowed long before it ever reaches a classroom.

If I were a malign foreign actor dead set on crippling America’s historic advantage in science and technology (and resultant economic advantage), I genuinely don’t know what I’d do differently than this administration
Grad student visas limited to 4-years. Extension possible in principle:
dhs.gov/news/2026/07/16/trum…
It's impossible to finish a Physics PhD in 4 years. How hard will it be to get an extension? Will any foreigner still come to the US for a science or engineering PhD?
OaklandSchoolReport retweeted
This policy limits student visas to 4 yrs, then USCIS must approve a formal extension request.
Median PhD length is 5-6 yrs, so most would have to extend. It's retroactive, applying to existing students and those incoming Fa26.
I predict a sharp decrease in foreign PhD student matriculation. It's hard to know what the odds of extension denial are because there are so few details, and being denied an extension means throwing away 4 years of work. I predict top foreign talent wouldn't take that risk given other options.
Overall: I think this is a pretty bad self-goal. America's dominance over the years has relied in part on being a tech innovation powerhouse, which is enabled by attracting top talent. Gambling our tech dominance is a national security risk.
If our goal here is to stop student visa abuse, a couple possible alternatives that come to mind:
* Crack down more on universities with poor track records of student abuse, rather than scaring away students from every university.
* Carve-outs for doctoral study, especially in STEM.

This is the sheer stupidity of US immigration policy: bringing brilliant students here, training them in our top labs, and then sending them home to compete with us. We should readily be providing green cards to the graduates of universities such as CMU, not letting the racists destroy US competitiveness with their mindless rants.
Congratulations to Zhilin Yang, founder and CEO of @Kimi_Moonshot, on the latest Kimi release. What a huge win for the open-source community!
It feels like just yesterday Zhilin was graduating from my lab at CMU, jointly co-advised with William Cohen. Not only did he complete his Ph.D. in just four years, but he also made truly fundamental contributions to ML during his time at CMU.
What a spectacular career! Congrats again Zhilin, and thank you and the entire Kimi team for everything you're doing for the open-source community.

The school board majority that negotiated and funds the deal was elected with OEA backing (Jennifer Brouhard, Valarie Bachelor, Rachel Latta, and VanCedric Williams). Some of them are former OEA leaders. The interim superintendent they hired, Denise Saddler, is a former OEA president.

Public sector unions are bad.
These unions are not negotiating against billionaires or some convenient cartoon villain. They're rent seeking and negotiating against taxpayers, and they'll shut down vital infrastructure if we don't humor their tantrum.
I am usually pro-labor but the LIRR strike is absurd
they’re already the best paid agency in the country, with average total comp of over $200K, and now they’re refusing a 4% raise?
This is a perfect example of why US transit is so inefficient!

The notion that grad students can't make ends meet is absolutely ridiculous to me. I live a mile away from Harvard. I am essentially a grad student with no stipend and no support. I'm making it work. Why can't they? The people who this screws are me -- marginal admits.

In the Argument today, Nicholas Bagley and Robert Gordon argue that Democrats have a public sector unions problem: if you want good results, you have to be able to hire the best people and fire the worst ones.

We need to kill this narrative. Over the last few years, the concerns about tech in K-12 had little to do with test scores. The concerns were psychological, social, and spiritual. Don't let the media do this "oh, scores haven't improved" thing. It'll be a back door for tech to return.
“The share of students using cellphones in class for nonacademic reasons declined to 13 percent from 61 percent in schools using the pouches … But test scores have not increased … Still, teachers have been thrilled with the change, reporting fewer distractions” — @DanaGoldstein

This is deeply stupid & I say this as a restaurant owner.
1) The longer a restaurant has been open the lower its overall basis is. A new restaurant built at today’s costs will have higher debt & fixed costs than one built 10 years ago. But compete at the ~ same price points.
2) If a restaurant has been around >25 years it’s far more likely they own the real estate. If so this means yet another advantage for a restaurant already likely to be in a better position.
3) And finally it’s bad because the state has no business propping up one restaurant over another. If a 35 year old restaurant with its own real estate cannot compete, it’s actually good for it to turn over into something that people do want. The sheer age of a restaurant doesn’t earn it the right to be subsidized by its competitors.

Of America's 40 CSAs with more than 1.5 million people, only 7 shrank in population from 2020 to 2025:
- St. Louis (-6.3k people)
- Detroit (-8.7k)
- Chicago (-21.7k)
- Cleveland (-26k)
- Pittsburgh (-42.6k)
- San Francisco-San Jose (-84.7k)
- Los Angeles (-200.4k)
The Rust Belt shrinking at least makes some sense in light of decades of economic malaise.
California, though. Its presence on the list is a horror, brought on nigh solely by abysmal governance of one of the richest, most naturally advantaged places on Earth.
