Vaccine safety: We compared excess adverse events after #COVID19 vaccination (Pfizer-BioNTech) and after documented #SARSCoV2 infection.
nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NE…
Take-home message: Low excess risk of adverse events after vaccination, higher after infection.
Some thoughts👇

How not to talk about vaccines:
Only half the population is vaccinated, and anti-vaxxers are to blame. Vaccines are safe and effective.
A better option:
Over 160M Americans are fully vaccinated. Yes, vaccines have risks, but COVID poses greater risk.

What are best approaches to testing to safely reopen schools & keep offices / workplaces safe? What options do businesses & schools have. Why rapid vs lab-based test?
I gave a short talk to Massachusetts legislators on precisely this. Watch here:

A balanced discussion of the controversy surrounding rapid antigen tests for #COVID19.
Simply put - it shouldn't be a controversy. PCR & Rapid Ag tests can have different uses. Ag a test for infectiousness. PCR a test for current or recent infection.

Happy administration is pushing for rapid tests
But we also need scaling of inexpensive $5 or less tests that can scale to millions per day if we want to make any dent on transmission
We need the inexpensive ones that can scale like Innova to be authorized

Brilliant short video on rapid antigen tests and their use for public health testing as compared to PCR - which - I feel - should be reserved for clinical diagnostic testing.

HOW have we FAILED to get frequent rapid testing out?!
•The science & plans are there
•All you've given is pushback

PLEASE ACT NOW!
@ASMicrobiology @APHL
This doesn’t look good and doesn’t bode well if anyone is expecting #COVID19 to just sort of... hopefully... maybe... disappear.
Unlikely.
What we should have done five months ago and didn’t... let’s do that today so we’re not looking back 5 months from now wishing we acted

We examined the coevolution of policy and science during the pandemic, finding that recent, high-quality science is being heard, but rather unevenly.

If we wanted to get serious vs B.1.1.7
—get N95/K95 masks to all and enforce their use
—get rapid home testing big supply to each household for daily use
—amp up digital, mobility, genomic and wastewater surveillance 100X
—vaccinate 24/7 like it's an emergency. Because it is.

New requirements mandate -ve #COVID19 test within 3 days of flying to US
Have we learned nothing?
Cannot stop transmission by asking for tests a full 3 days before
Much better to use a rapid test at gate
Can be Antigen or RNA... but must be rapid.
