This week is all about celebrating Ontario agriculture. 🌻 That includes all of the incredible growers that help make our spaces beautiful with flowers, plants and ornamental crops. As you admire all the wonderful fall decorations popping up around us, you can feel proud knowing that everything from mums, flowers, pumpkins, plants, and more were grown right here on Ontario farms. It’s a reminder that Ontario agriculture not only feeds us, but also makes our world brighter and more beautiful. Let’s keep the celebration going together—share your Ontario-grown flowers and tag them with #ONTAgWeek!

Happy Ontario Agriculture Week, there is no better time to celebrate what makes Ontario Agriculture special! The Greenbelt plays a unique role in Ontario’s food system; it is home to the province’s only two specialty crop areas, the Holland Marsh and the Niagara Tender Fruit and Grape Area, whose fertile soils and unique climate conditions allow Greenbelt farmers to grow crops that can’t be found commercially anywhere else. Greenbelt farms are a major supplier of Ontario-grown fruits and vegetables. In 2016, the Greenbelt had 269,912 acres of farmland in fruit production and 2,801 acres in vegetable production. This is more than 50% of all of Ontario’s fruit acres 🍷🍇 🍑🍐87.9% of peaches, 85.8% of plums and prunes, 84.4% of apricots and 71.8% of pears are grown in the Greenbelt. 🥕🥬🥦Over 66% of Ontario’s celery, 47% of cauliflower and 25% of the province’s acreage in lettuce, spinach, Chinese cabbage and carrot is grown in the Greenbelt. Think you know what grows in Ontario? Think again. From watermelon and sweet potatoes to bok choy, peanuts and ginseng, Ontario farms produce a much wider range of crops than many consumers might realize. The OFA’s Home Grown campaign raises awareness of why it’s important to preserve Ontario farmland to produce local food, fuel, flowers and fibre. Read more here ➡️ ofa.on.ca/newsroom/think-you…

Eat the season: Ontario tomatoes are here. Few things capture the taste of summer like a vine-ripened Ontario tomato. Grown close to home and picked at the peak of freshness, they're full of flavour that's hard to beat. From sandwiches and salads to homemade sauces and salsa, Ontario tomatoes are a staple of summer meals. Eat the Season. Love What's Local.
