Sad news. He was a very good poet.
Very sorry to report that Douglas Dunn has passed away. He was the finest Scottish poet of the post-war period. Dougie was also someone we knew and loved as a dear friend, mentor and teacher, and he will be deeply missed.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

That clanger leaps off the page like a whale breaching.
Replying to @frasermatthew
I stopped reading at "Moby-Dick, The Great Gatsby, The Scarlet Letter, The Secret History – none of these totemic American greats has a joke between them." "Moby-Dick" doesn't have jokes? That's just stupid.

This is so incorrect it hardly needs saying. So many novels to point to. Denby herself confusedly enlists Moby-Dick for her own argument. But I will take the opportunity to mention Portnoy's Complaint and say the obvious about it, that it is relentlessly funny.
