As ProPublica reported, the FBI was assembling a sweeping bribery case against Susan Collins over an alleged pay-to-play racket: trading federal defense contracts for campaign cash. That probe was killed after corrupt conman Trump slithered back into office in 2025.
The lack of interest from congressional reporters in the Susan Collins corruption scandal is bizarre
Susan Collins just walked out of a committee room to a swarm of reporters, including myself, who began walking alongside her.
A corporate media reporter walking directly to her left asked the first question. One might expect any journalist lucky enough to get the first question would ask about the obvious: the corruption scandal Collins is now embroiled in following ProPublica’s groundbreaking reporting about the FBI’s investigation into her quid pro quo dealings with defense contractor Navatek.
Instead, the corporate media reporter asked her for her thoughts about U.S. tariffs on Canada. What? If Graham Platner were the senator from Maine at the center of such a corruption scandal, would corporate media ask him about anything else with a long hallway of runway to press on it? For months, they relentlessly asked senators who endorsed him, like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, whether they’d condemn him for his tattoos or posts on Reddit. I watched it happen day after day.
Standing on the other side of Collins, directly to her right, I attempted to ask whether she called the Navatek donor after Scott Reed asked for his number so the senator could thank him for his contribution to her super PAC. But before I could do so, she promptly finished up her answer on the Canadian tariff question and darted into a stairwell, where we are not permitted to film.
If you’re wondering how corporate media insulates the powerful and well-connected, this is a great example.

The seven-year-old allegations made against Senator Collins and her staff in this piece are categorically false. There have never been any allegations of wrongdoing by the Collins for Senator campaign, and the campaign was never the target of the FBI investigation.
ProPublica took the word of someone who pled guilty to five counts of money laundering, three counts of wire fraud, one count of bank fraud, and making false submissions to the FEC. As Martin Kao was awaiting sentencing, he began making outlandish charges about the Collins office, deflecting blame from himself and placing it on Senator Collins, including alleging that our office required contributions before taking meetings and engaged in extortion, pay for play, and bribery. The FBI and the Court obviously did not believe Kao, and in 2025 he was sentenced in two separate cases to prison terms of seven years and three years to be served concurrently, as well as an additional five years of supervised release at the end of his prison term.
It is important to note that during the Biden Administration the FBI and the Department of Justice thoroughly investigated the Navatek matter. The Collins campaign cooperated fully with the FBI throughout the investigation, producing all of the documents it requested and serving as fact witnesses in official settings. In response to the allegations in the ProPublica piece, the FBI clearly stated that a suggestion of wrongdoing by Senator Collins or her staff is “totally false.”
These issues were resolved in 2021, and the FBI has not contacted us about Martin Kao since then.

This Austin ICE shooting is pretty incredible. They smashed the DoorDash driver's car. They shot the driver in the back. They pull them out of the car. Tear open his shirt. Confirm he's been shot. Take him to the hospital. Remove him 4 hours later with the bullet still in him and bring him to detention center for questioning, refusing to tell his family where he is. Apparently he's still there with the bullet in him today, without pain meds, without seeing his family, without seeing counsel, and with ICE doing its own investigation into itself.
