AI is finding new applications in road safety, helping vehicles detect hazards beyond what their own sensors can see. Researchers at the Technical University of Munich and BMW have developed an AI system that combines data from vehicles, traffic lights and roadside sensors to create a real-time digital picture of surrounding traffic. Updated every 100 milliseconds, the system predicts the movements of cars, cyclists and pedestrians, including those approaching from areas that may be obscured from a driver's view. The technology could be particularly useful at intersections and construction sites, where visibility is limited and road conditions can change quickly.
