Today, we're proud to launch Operation End Starvation (OES), a groundbreaking public-private partnership to end the leading cause of preventable death among children worldwide: starvation. 🧵
Today is World Food Day, and 43 million children under the age of 5 around the world are suffering from acute malnutrition, a crisis driven by conflict, extreme weather, and economic shocks.
But we know how to treat them.
Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) is a peanut-based medical food paste packed with the vitamins, minerals, and protein a severely malnourished child needs to recover.
Children too sick to eat regular food can recover in about six weeks, and a caregiver can give it at home.
What’s missing is the consistent funding to get it to every child who needs it. That’s why we’re building Operation End Starvation alongside governments, health workers, and partners to scale delivery of RUTF and end child deaths from starvation.

Every 30 seconds, a child dies from acute malnutrition. The treatment exists. Getting it to them is the hard part. OES just received a new $5M grant from the @gatesfoundation to fix just that. #OES
We have assembled an all-star team. New hires include a former aid mission director, a former chief financial officer of the Peace Corps, and a retired U.S. Foreign Service officer. Learn more about the team at operationendstarvation.org/t… #OES
đź“° NEWS: @elissamio at @devex covered the supersonic rise of OES
Check out her recent piece for an in-depth look at how OES was built, where our funding stands, and the first programs launching in Nigeria and Sudan this October. #OES #RUTF🌍

OES was built to solve one of the most challenging issues in humanitarian assistance — securing consistent, multiyear commitments to the production and deployment of aid.
@EleanorCrookFdn CEO Will Moore told Grant Blankenship at @gpbnews: "We're covering all of the overhead. So all of staff expenses, all of expenses that it takes to run Operation End Starvation as a lean organization will be charged to philanthropy rather than to the U.S. government."
Thank you to the GA members that supported this mission: @RepBuddyCarter, @SenatorWarnock , @RepMcCormick, and @AustinScottGA08

In a new @nytimes article by @snolen, the @StateDept increasing commitment to effective international assistance programs was spotlighted.
Operation End Starvation was modeled after the success of @gavi and @GlobalFund so it means so much to be named with such incredible organizations.
We can end child starvation with treatments such as RUTF and MMS and are excited to scale our efforts with the help of public and private partners.
Thank you to @SecRubio and the entire team for their partnership and to a bipartisan group of Congress members for this breakthrough.

"Working directly with Operation End Starvation, the United States will deliver results with optimal efficiency, supporting those suffering from severe acute malnutrition, including children under five, through smart procurement and impactful programming.
This partnership also leverages the generosity of the American people through contributions from philanthropic organizations to get life-saving nutrition to children in need." state.gov/releases/office-of…
It's led by CEO Will Moore (CEO of the Eleanor Crook Foundation) and an independent board chaired by the Hon. Chris Stewart (former R-UT). Members include the Hon. Ted Yoho (former R-FL), Amit Paley of the Malnutrition Advocacy Fund, and Joseph Mandelbaum of 1Life1World.
The solutions exist. They can be scaled up today.
Together, we will create a world where no child dies of hunger.
