My latest: The late great Wilt Chamberlain would be proud that two graduates from Overbrook HS are recipients of the scholarship named for his legacy. phillytrib.com/sports/overbr…

He was the first international NBA star. He originally saved the league. He wasn’t generational. He was Once In Lifetime. MF Wilt!

At his 1979 Hall of Fame induction, Wilt Chamberlain called for two major changes to the NBA: 1. A shorter season: “Too many games... Sixty games would be plenty.” 2. Wider courts: “The players are so big and so good, they need more room to do their things.”

Wilt Chamberlain recorded the NBA record 23 blocks in a nationally televised Christmas Day game against the Phoenix Suns. • 15 PTS • 15 REB • 6 AST • 23 BLK (15 in 2nd half) “The kind of shot-blocking and defense that would make even Bill Russell cringe.” (Dec. 26, 1968)

Can you imagine what Ausar Thompson would be like at 7-1 with a 7-8 wingspan and super human strength. The Big Dipper wouldn’t have to

His vertical from a standing position off two feet is like nothing you’ve ever seen. He could wait until a shooter was about to release his shot before elevating. It’s why he put up block numbers that are out of this world. He is Once In A Lifetime. Wilt

Who compared the two? I got to know Wilt when he was in his mid 40’s. He played with us at UCLA all the time in the summer. Saw him dominate big men 20+ yrs younger, when he felt so inspired. Would hold court afterward, entrancing us with his legendary exploits, while laying on the grass in front of the gym…what a time!

Even in his mid 30’s Wilt’s standing vertical off two feet was insane. During Kareem’s @kaj33 20-year career no other center came close to blocking the skyhook as often as The Big Dipper did. That’s just a basketball truth.

My favorite photo of Wilt—after being traded to the Sixers. He would go on to win 3 straight NBA MVPs and a championship back home.
