“I don’t really care who guards me.” Larry Bird wasn’t interested in the hype surrounding Robert Reid’s defense. Even after Reid made life difficult for him in Game 3, limiting Bird to 10-of-26 shooting, Larry Legend refused to back down. The 1986 Celtics were a historic team, winning 67 regular-season games and going 40-1 at home. Bird had already captured his third consecutive MVP award, and Boston entered the Finals determined to win another championship against the Houston Rockets. Reid had given Bird trouble during their 1981 Finals meeting, holding him to 15.3 points per game. Five years later, the defensive battle returned to the spotlight. After Boston won the first two games, Houston fought back with a dramatic 106-104 victory in Game 3. Bird scored just six points in the second half, and suddenly everyone was talking about Reid's defense again. But Bird wasn't concerned. “If I get the same shots, I’ll be pleased. I’m not worried about Robert Reid. The only thing I worry about is being four points behind with one second to go.” That's Larry Bird in a nutshell. No excuses, no fear, no obsession with individual matchups. He cared about winning, making the right plays, and delivering when his team needed him most. The Celtics went on to defeat Houston in six games, capturing the 1986 NBA championship and cementing their place among the greatest teams ever assembled. You could put the best defender in front of Larry Bird. He would still believe the next shot was going in. That was Larry Legend. ☘️

He was a magician with a basketball in his hands.

Larry Bird was only in his second NBA season, and he was already making the game look easy. During the 1980–81 season, the Celtics won 25 of 26 games during one incredible stretch. Bird played with a confidence that made the impossible look routine. He could launch a jumper from deep, turn away before it reached the rim, and make you believe he already knew it was going in. Boston finished the regular season 62–20, but the real battle was still ahead. The Celtics swept Chicago in the playoffs before running into a Philadelphia 76ers team that pushed them to the edge. Down 3–1 in the Eastern Conference Finals, Boston had no room for another mistake. Bird wasn't ready to go home. Game 5: Boston survived 111–109. Game 6: Down by 17, the Celtics stormed back to win 100–98. Game 7: Everything came down to one night at Boston Garden. Philadelphia kept fighting, but Bird seemed to be everywhere when it mattered most. A steal. A rebound. Free throws. One defensive play after another. Then came the go-ahead jumper. Boston won 91–90, completing an unforgettable comeback from a 3–1 deficit. Bird didn't just help the Celtics survive. He showed everyone what kind of competitor he was. And he wasn't finished. In the NBA Finals, Boston faced Moses Malone and the Houston Rockets. Bird didn't need to score 40 points to control a game. His anticipation, passing, rebounding, defense, and relentless effort could change everything in a single possession. In Game 1, Bird missed a jumper, read the rebound before anyone else, chased it toward the baseline, caught it in midair, switched the ball from his right hand to his left, and somehow finished while flying out of bounds. Red Auerbach reportedly called it the greatest play he had ever seen. One moment captured everything that made Bird special. He saw things other players didn't see. He reacted before others understood what was happening. And he never stopped competing until the play was over. Boston eventually closed out Houston in Game 6, winning 102–91 behind Bird's 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists. The Celtics were champions. Larry Bird was named Finals MVP, capping a remarkable season that announced his arrival among the NBA's biggest stars. Second NBA season. First NBA championship. He was already making the game look easy, and the league was only beginning to understand what Larry Legend could become. Larry Legend was just getting started.
