I built a website for the 2027 NFL Draft that tracks how prospects rise and fall throughout the entire pre-draft process.

My biggest issue with PFF grades (besides arguing the grade on individual throws) is that they claim to group plays into one of 9 “bins” (from -2.0 to 2.0). But from everything I’ve seen, the overwhelming majority of plays really fall into just 5 “bins” (from -1.0 to 1.0). That means throws with clearly different levels of quality can end up getting the exact same grade. A throw that barely qualifies as a +0.5 and one that is almost good enough to be a +1.0 are treated the same (even though there can be a real difference between them).
I understand why PFF does this. It would be much harder for graders to reliably tell the difference between something like a +0.6 and a +0.7 (and that could add even more subjectivity). But if you could grade plays on a smaller scale (say 0.1 instead of 0.5), you could keep more information and get a more precise idea of QB performance.
Important reminder
What the PFF grade measures is the part of the play the QB actually controls — the read, the decision, the throw. Not the result that lands in the box score.
