Yesterday, 21st October 2026, I had the privilege of serving as a Moderator at the Campus Food Security Summit 2026, convened by Learn And Lunch in partnership with the KIU Guild Union at Kampala International University, @kiuvarsity @Nutrisafe_org @learn_N_lunch Under the theme “Building Food-Secure Universities in Uganda,” the Summit brought together students, university leaders, policymakers, researchers, nutrition professionals and development partners to have an important conversation about an issue that is often overlooked — food insecurity among university students. Food security is not simply about having something to eat. Students need access to food that is adequate, safe, affordable and nutritious because what students eat directly affects their health, wellbeing, concentration, participation and ability to succeed academically. What made the conversation particularly important was the recognition that campus hunger can be invisible. Many students may experience difficulties accessing food without openly speaking about them. Addressing this challenge therefore requires empathy, understanding and solutions that protect students' dignity. Students must also be at the centre of the conversation. They are not merely beneficiaries of food-security interventions; their experiences, ideas and leadership are essential in developing practical and sustainable solutions. The Summit reminded us that universities, government, students, civil society, food providers and development partners all have a role to play. Collaboration is critical if we are to create healthier and more supportive campus food environments. The conversation must continue beyond the Summit from dialogue to action. #CampusFoodSecurity #LearnAndLunch #NutritionistKD #NutritionCommandCentre

A student cannot be expected to thrive academically while struggling to access a nutritious meal. Building food-secure universities requires recognising nutrition as a core part of student welfare, learning and academic success. At the panel discussion on “What Will It Take to Build a Food-Secure University?”, speakers explored the realities of campus hunger, rising food prices, food safety concerns and the need for stronger institutional policies that guarantee students access to affordable, safe and nutritious food. The conversation also highlighted the need for practical, campus-led solutions. From developing food hubs and campus gardens to improving food storage, vendor standards and access to affordable meals, universities have opportunities to create healthier food environments for their students. Another important reminder came from the discussion on student hunger: “Campus hunger is real.” It is an issue that can remain hidden as students struggle in silence, often afraid to ask for help or be judged. Addressing it requires more than individual budgeting; it calls for collective responsibility, student representation, reliable data and policies that put student wellbeing first. #FoodSecurity #StudentWelfare #Nutrition #YouthAdvocacy

Campus hunger is real, and no student should have to choose between a meal and academic success. Building food-secure universities starts with affordable, nutritious meals, stronger food policies and student voices at the table. Food security is student welfare. #FoodSecurity #StudentWelfare #Nutrition #YouthAdvocacy

While at @serenahotels in Kampala, convened by @WHOUganda & @MinofHealthUG ; Reflecting on Health Worker Migration: Why We Must Train, Recruit & Retain Nutritionists. 1. Nutritionists save lives : They help prevent and manage malnutrition and nutrition-related diseases across the life course. 2. Training builds a stronger health system Investing in quality nutrition education creates skilled professionals who can respond to changing nutrition challenges. 3. Recruitment closes the nutrition workforce gap Communities need enough qualified Nutritionists in hospitals, schools, communities and public health programmes. 4. Retention protects our investment When trained Nutritionists leave due to poor working conditions or limited opportunities, countries lose valuable skills and experience. 5. Keep Nutritionists where they are needed most - Fair remuneration, career growth, supportive workplaces and professional development can help retain nutrition talent and strengthen local health systems.
