This month, we celebrate 50 years since the first administration of FDG to a human by Prof Alavi Abass
PET is truly extra-ordinary. We give patients one-millionth of a teaspoon of radioactive sugar (FDG) and generate whole body 3D pictures of sugar metabolism.
And the PET scanner technology continues to improve and amaze me daily.
Last week a patient came off the scanner and asked "I think you've done the wrong scan?". The patient was used to a 15 minute scan, but on our new Omni 128 "Total Body PET" with 1.3m of PET detectors, it's less than 3 minutes!
