Running Sam’s List has slowly turned me into the exact person I built Sam’s List for lol. I used to think getting an accountant was pretty straightforward: Need accountant → get referral → hire accountant → problem solved. Then I started actually running a business. In the last few weeks I’ve had to figure out if we paid a tax bill, search multiple bank accounts trying to find the payment, think about cash flow after spending $8k on a man’s thigh, decide what we can actually afford to spend on marketing, how to price x product, plus about 400 other 'tiny' financial decisions. And I’m realizing how often “you need an accountant” isn’t actually the answer. Maybe you need a bookkeeper. Maybe you need a CPA who understands your exact situation. Maybe you need someone helping you think through the business. Maybe you need an entirely different specialist. I knew this when we started Sam’s List. It hits VERY differently when it’s your company and your money lol. Turns out becoming your own target customer is a pretty effective way to figure out what to build next.

98% of the people who contact a firm on Sam's List reach out to a firm with 3+ client reviews. I was explaining this to an accounting firm owner today and even saying the number out loud was kind of crazy. We have 658 firms on Sam’s List. Only 103 of them have 3 or more client reviews. That’s less than 16% of the firms on the entire platform. And that group is getting 98% of the contacts. Like... they are dominating. The weird part is that 3 reviews isn't even that many. But it makes sense when I think about how I actually look for someone to handle my own money. Even if a friend tells me “you should use my accountant,” I'm still looking them up. I'm going to their website. I'm looking at their LinkedIn. I'm Googling their name. I want to know who else they've worked with and what those people have to say. And accountants are asking me all the time how they can get more leads from Sam’s List. Obviously we want to send them more people. But if someone lands on your profile and there is nothing there from an actual client, getting another 100 people to look at it probably isn't fixing the problem. This is also why reviews are a big part of Sam’s List and how we originally started. You can see what services a firm offers, who they work with, their pricing if they've shared it, their credentials, and then reviews from people who have actually worked with them. I don't want someone to pick an accountant because of a personal recommendation. I want them to have enough information to actually compare a few people and decide for themselves. And apparently 3 reviews can make a much bigger difference than I realized.

When asked for an interview, most people would put the pizza down that they’re eating. Not me. Big girl gotta eat. I love building Sam’s List and documenting it has made it even more fun.
