Pride – The Engineers of Human Souls.
Pride is not the craftsman’s satisfaction in good work. That kind of pride built cathedrals.
Pride is the certainty that you know better than other people how they should live.
Pride is looking at a society and seeing a machine – with yourself as the engineer.
Pride is impatience with reality. Reality is slow, messy, full of people who want different things. So pride replaces it with a plan.
Pride "loves" humanity and despises people. Humanity never argues back.
Pride is blind in one specific way: it cannot see what it does not know. Hayek called it the fatal conceit – the belief that a few clever people can know what millions know, each about his own work, his own family, his own street.
Pride wears the mask of compassion. "For your own good" – the most dangerous words in politics. C.S. Lewis warned that the worst tyranny is the one exercised sincerely for the good of its victims – because its enforcers sleep with a clear conscience.
Pride never admits a mistake. A failed plan was sabotaged, betrayed, underfunded – never wrong. So the next plan is bigger.
And pride never lives in its own design. The architect of the housing estate lives in the old town. The reformer of the school sends his children somewhere else. The planner never pays for his plan.
Now scale it up. Plato’s ideal city abolished the family among its rulers and told the people a useful lie. The French revolutionaries redesigned even the clock – ten hours a day; it lasted barely a year and a half. Trotsky promised that under socialism the average man would rise to the level of Aristotle, Goethe or Marx; what came out was a man queuing for bread and informing on his neighbor. Le Corbusier wanted to raze the heart of Paris for identical towers; his ideas shaped the grim estates on the edge of every European city – designed for a new man, inhabited by real ones. Today the same pride works in committees, redesigning language, the family and what children must learn about themselves. Quieter than a revolution. The same certainty.
The West’s best tradition starts from the opposite place. Socrates: the wisest man knows that he does not know. Chesterton: never take down a fence until you know why it was put up. Society is not a machine. It is a living thing – grown, not built. The statesman should be a gardener, not an engineer.
A free society does not abolish pride. It converts it: be as proud as you like of what you build – your house, your company, your family – and let reality judge it. The planner is proud of what he designs for everyone else, and never has to live in it.
The cure is the oldest one: know what you don’t know. And let people live their own lives.
The Seven Deadly Sins – at the Scale of a Civilization.
More than fourteen centuries ago, Christian monks drew up a list of seven sins. Not laws – a map of the human heart. Envy. Pride. Wrath. Sloth. Greed. Gluttony. Lust. It is still pretty much the most accurate psychology anyone has written.
The monks were looking at one soul at a time. Look at whole systems instead, and you find the same seven. A vice that stays private ruins one life. Scaled up, it becomes an institution: a tax, a ministry, an ideology, a budget line.
People will always have vices. The question is who pays for them.
Adam Smith noticed that we owe our dinner not to the butcher’s kindness but to his self-interest. A free market does not abolish greed – it puts it to work: you get rich only by serving others, and you go bankrupt if you don’t. The vice pays its own bill. Bad systems let the vice send its bill to someone else – the taxpayer, the next generation, the innocent.
A good civilization does not abolish sin. It sends the bill to the sinner.
So here is what comes next, one sin at a time:
1. Envy – the engine of socialism. If I can’t have it, nobody should.
2. Pride – the planner’s conceit, from Plato’s philosopher-king to the Brussels directive.
3. Wrath – vengeance without trial, from the guillotine to cancel culture.
4. Sloth – comfort as a political program, from bread and circuses to the empty cradle.
5. Greed – the one everybody expects us to defend. We won’t: crony capitalism, the bailout, private profit and public loss.
6. Gluttony – debt. Eating the future.
7. Lust – pleasure cut off from its consequences, and from children.
And then the cures: the four old virtues – prudence, justice, temperance, fortitude – and the institutions that make them stick.
The monks thought sin was a matter for the confessional. They were half right. It is also a matter for the budget.
Show me a country’s budget, and I will tell you which sins it subsidizes.
First up: Envy.
Envy – the Engine of Socialism.
A genie appears to a peasant: "I’ll grant you one wish." The peasant thinks for a long time. His neighbor has a goat. "Kill the neighbor’s goat."
That is envy. Not wanting what someone else has – that’s ambition, and it built most of the world. Envy is wanting him not to have it. Even if you gain nothing. Even if you lose.
Every other sin at least promises pleasure. Envy promises only that someone else will have less. And it is the one sin nobody ever confesses – because it never calls itself envy. It calls itself fairness. Justice. Equality.
Socialism is envy at scale: not lifting the bottom, but cutting the top. Thatcher caught it in one sentence in Parliament: her opponents would rather the poor were poorer, provided the rich were less rich.
In experiments, people will pay out of their own pocket to destroy money belonging to others. Whole countries do the same: the tax that raises little but drives away the people it targets, the school that abolishes the advanced class because not everyone can take it, the rule written to bring down whoever got ahead.
In Soviet villages, a kulak – a "rich" peasant – was often a man with two cows. Liquidating the kulaks did not give anyone a cow. It gave everyone the famine.
That is envy’s bill. Envy aims it at the successful. But the successful leave, or stop trying – and the bill comes back to everyone. Kill the goat and you get no milk. Neither does anyone else.
The Greeks knew there were two kinds of rivalry. Hesiod wrote that the potter competes with the potter, the craftsman with the craftsman – and that this strife is good, because it makes everyone work harder. The other kind only destroys.
A free society does not abolish envy. It converts it: you may have what your neighbor has – by doing what he did. Socialism converts it the other way, into policy, so that nobody has the goat.
The cure is old and simple: gratitude for what you have, and the ambition to build what you don’t.
Next: Pride.

Most political conversations should start with the words:
"You are a mental communist. The world doesn't work like that."
Why?
Because the people who go into politics and journalism alike are the ones who have a model of the world in their head – and want to enforce it.
Every model is wrong. It is a model, not reality. But they are also the people with neither the humility nor the intelligence to recognize that. These people are proud.
The engineer tests his model against reality. When the bridge cracks, he changes the model. The farmer, the doctor, the shopkeeper, the mother of four – reality corrects them every single day.
The mental communist does the opposite. When reality doesn't fit the model, he changes reality. A new law, a new ministry, a new program – and when that fails too, a bigger one.
Hayek explained why the worst get on top: the power to plan other people's lives attracts those most certain they know how others should live, and the system rewards them for it. The humble don't run for office or write editorials. They build things.
In Poland we had a whole state run by people with a model of the world. The world didn't work like that. The shelves were empty.
So we need two things. Put people into politics who have met reality – who built something, ran something, paid for their own mistakes. And give whoever is in charge as little power as possible, because every model is wrong, and the damage grows with the power behind it.
The best politician is the one who knows his model is wrong – and therefore wants as little power as possible to enforce it.
So yes, start the conversation with this: "You are a mental communist. The world doesn't work like that."
Then show him how it does.

The railroad that connected America coast to coast was built on one of the biggest corruption schemes in the country's history, and the man at the center of it got a giant pyramid built in his honor.
In the 1860s, the federal government wanted a transcontinental railroad badly. It handed the Union Pacific millions of acres of land and backed it with huge government loans. The more track the company laid, the more money it got.
The men running Union Pacific realized the real money wasn't in running a railroad. It was in building one.
So they set up a separate company with a fancy French name, Crédit Mobilier of America, and hired it to do the construction. The catch was that Crédit Mobilier was owned by the same insiders who ran Union Pacific. They were basically hiring themselves.
Crédit Mobilier then charged Union Pacific wildly inflated prices for the work. Union Pacific paid with government money and borrowed funds. The profits flowed to the insiders through Crédit Mobilier, while Union Pacific itself was loaded down with debt. Investors in Crédit Mobilier saw enormous dividends.
There was one risk. Congress might start asking questions.
That's where Oakes Ames came in. Ames was a wealthy shovel manufacturer from Massachusetts, a congressman, and one of the leaders of Crédit Mobilier. He started offering shares of the company to fellow members of Congress at a bargain price, often letting them pay out of the dividends the stock itself produced. In his own letters, he said he was putting the stock where it would do the most good.
In 1869, the golden spike was driven at Promontory Summit in Utah. The country celebrated. Nobody knew yet what it had cost.
Then a former partner of Ames named Henry McComb, who felt he'd been cheated out of his share, leaked Ames's letters. In September 1872, in the middle of the presidential campaign, the New York Sun broke the story.
The list of names was brutal. Vice President Schuyler Colfax. Henry Wilson, who was about to become the next vice president. Future president James Garfield. Several powerful committee chairmen.
Congress launched investigations. Some of the men admitted taking stock but claimed they didn't know what it was. Others said they'd backed out. Colfax gave explanations that fell apart under questioning and left office in disgrace when his term ended. Garfield denied doing anything wrong and survived to win the presidency eight years later.
In the end, the House censured just two men, Oakes Ames and New York congressman James Brooks. Many people saw it as a cover. The men who took the stock got off, and the man who handed it out took the fall.
Both Brooks and Ames died within a few months.
Ames's family and supporters spent years insisting he'd been made a scapegoat for a scheme half of Washington had profited from. In 1883, the Massachusetts legislature passed a resolution praising him.
Around the same time, the Union Pacific built a monument to Oakes Ames and his brother Oliver. It's a granite pyramid about 60 feet tall, placed at the highest point on the original transcontinental line in Wyoming, where every passing train would see it.
Then the railroad moved its tracks a few miles south. The pyramid still stands today, alone on the Wyoming plains, honoring a man censured by Congress, next to a railroad that isn't there anymore.
It's called the Crédit Mobilier scandal, and almost nobody learns about it.

When Andrew Jackson was president, he implemented Specie Circular - which largely removed credit from land purchases.
It had to be purchased in silver or gold.
The result was an 88% reduction in the price of real estate. Compare that to today, from the 2008 bank bail out, the Covid stimulus, to 50 year mortgages, the ruling class does anything and everything to prevent the stock market and real estate from correcting.
The price of that policy is the affordability crisis.

Indeed. This gets to the heart of Girard's argument...
“If you could talk with Greek or Roman functionaries and you tried to suggest to them that victims have rights, it wouldn't even make them laugh. They wouldn't understand. It was unthinkable in any world but our own. Whereas today, this language isn't challenged by anyone.”
“As far as I know, the texts [of the Psalms] are the first in human history to allow those who would simply become silent victims in the world of myth to voice their complaint as hysterical crowds besiege them. Human packs pursue them, insult them rudely, art traps for them, and encircle them in order to lynch them. ... [The Psalms] may be the oldest texts in human history to let the voice of victims, rather than that of their persecutors, be heard.”
“Before the cross, every violence was portrayed as heroic and so forth. In literature, the epics, even tragedy, justified the casting out of the victim. Only the Bible doesn't do that. Therefore we owe so much to the Bible...we cannot recognize our debt.”
“...the biblical tradition punctures a universal delusion and reveals a truth never revealed before: the innocence not only of Jesus, but of all similar victims.”
“Christian vocabulary and the Christian point of view are insinuating themselves everywhere and becoming universal: it's a sign of the changing times, a sign that [Christian Revelation] is making progress.”
“When we criticize the Bible, we can criticize it only with the Bible — not with Iliad, not with Greek philosophy. We have assimilated so much and we're not aware that the substance we have assimilated comes from the Bible, which is [ultimately] that violence is ugly and not heroic...that violence is the ugly birth of the community.”
“In general, history is written by the victors. We're the [first] society that wants history to be written by the victims, and we don't see the unprecedented nature of the reversal.”

At last weekend's "Hollywood Icons" convention in Las Vegas, liberal lunatic Ben Stiller was publicly humiliated when he tried to announce a new "Dodgeball" movie with Vince Vaughan.
Vaughan, who was at the same convention on a different panel, told enthusiasts that he hasn't spoken to Stiller in years.

The Spartans lived in perpetual paranoia because they acted as an occupying force over the helots, a subjugated population that outnumbered them 7-to-1.
As a brutal training exercise, elite youths in the Krypteia (the Spartan secret police) were sent out to ambush and kill the strongest helots in cold blood. This served both to train the youth and to seed terror to prevent rebellions.
To avoid miasma—the wrath of the gods for spilling innocent blood—Spartan ephors (magistrates) officially declared war on the helots every year. This constant internal threat is the exact reason why Sparta lived as a fully militarized society

This was the real weakness of the Spartan system.
Sparta could produce one of Greece’s most formidable armies partly because the helots performed much of the agricultural labor that supported the citizen-warrior class.
But that meant Sparta effectively lived on top of a permanently hostile population that was ready to rebel at a moments notice.
Normalguy NotHitler retweeted
In 464 BC, Sparta was the most feared military power in Greece.
Then the ground opened up beneath it.
A massive earthquake struck the Spartan homeland. According to Plutarch, chunks of the peaks of Mount Taygetus broke off and came crashing down. The city itself was almost completely flattened. He wrote that only five houses were left standing.
At the moment it hit, a group of young Spartans was exercising together inside a gymnasium colonnade. Just before the quake, a hare darted past. Some of the young men, laughing, ran outside to chase it. The ones who stayed behind were crushed when the building collapsed on top of them. Every one of them died. Their shared grave became known as the Seismatias, the earthquake tomb.
The ancient historian Diodorus says around 20,000 people were killed.
But Sparta's real nightmare was just beginning.
Spartan society was built on the backs of the helots, an enslaved population that vastly outnumbered the Spartans themselves. The Spartans ruled them through terror. And the helots hated them for it.
King Archidamus understood exactly what was about to happen. While survivors were still frantically digging through the ruins, he ordered a trumpet blown as if an enemy army was attacking. Confused Spartans grabbed their weapons and rushed to form ranks around him.
He was right. Bands of helots were already coming from the countryside to finish the Spartans off while they were weak. They arrived expecting a broken, grieving city. Instead, they found Spartan soldiers standing in formation, armed and waiting.
The helots fell back, but they didn't give up. A full-scale revolt broke out. The rebels fortified themselves on Mount Ithome, and the mighty Spartan army couldn't dig them out. The siege dragged on for years.
Desperate, Sparta did something it almost never did. It asked Athens for help. Athens sent 4,000 heavily armed soldiers.
Then Sparta got paranoid. It worried the Athenians might side with the rebels, so it sent them home, the only allies dismissed while everyone else stayed. Athens took it as a public humiliation.
Thucydides points to this moment as the first open break between Athens and Sparta. The rift kept growing, and a few decades later the two powers went to war with each other in the Peloponnesian War, a conflict that would tear the Greek world apart.
It all started with an earthquake, and a hare.

After calling the United States the last and final form of the Roman Empire, Peter Thiel says he's dreamed of various forms of exit and escape, from the libertarian vision of sea-steading to his interest in New Zealand (he acquired citizenship in 2011) to his recent long visit to Argentina.
In a subsequent discussion, Peter Robinson lays emphasis on Thiel's apparent resolution to stay in the United States and fight—something that draws applause from the audience at his fourth and final Antichrist lecture in Nashville.
Thiel says he does not want to sound that reassuring.
Referencing the apocalyptic Matthew 24:16, in which Jesus instructs his disciples to flee to the moutains when they see the abomination of desolation, Thiel seems to indicate that he's of two minds about staying, or going, under shifting political conditions.
Thiel tells the audience that he did, in fact, depart California because leaving—"exit," in the parlance of tech—said more than spending tens of millions to fight a possible billionaire tax. (California voters will decide on the proposed wealth tax this November.)
In passing, he says he can't describe how many conversations were prompted by his long recent visit to Argentina. (Thiel is a close ally of President Javier Milei.)
Thiel argues that Elon Musk's dream of going to Mars had a political dimension, raising questions of sovereignty. The investor said he believes Musk gave up on Mars, not as a technical/scientific project, but as a political project, in 2024 (the year he threw in with Donald Trump's presidential campaign.)
At his fourth and final Nashville Antichrist lecture, Peter Thiel wonders whether the New Rome—per Thiel, the United States—will survive this century as it contends with what he describes as the twin threats of Antichrist and Armageddon.
America, he argues, is the last and final form of the Roman Empire. There is no successor, he says.
He doubts China has the financial and ideological heft to supersede the United States in that role—“Mandarin’s too hard to learn,” and no one outside China cares about Xi Jinping Thought.
In a subsequent discussion with Peter Robinson, he qualifies the claim that there is no successor, saying it’s possible the Roman Empire could be reconstituted in some form but that the path is very hard to see.
China, he concedes, may be closer to something like that on the military front; its buildup and technological advances notwithstanding, he argues the country hasn’t faced a meaningful test since its 1979 war with Vietnam. (Vietnam overthrew the China-backed Khmer Rouge.)
Thiel comments on the displacement of Great Britain by the United States, arguing that America took steps to smooth that transition. The systems and language were the same, he says, arguing that the United States gave its mother country some residual power even as it boxed it in. According to Thiel, the lack of a rival to the U.S. on par with what the U.S. was to Great Britain means the end of the United States has not been accelerated.
The investor worries that if things go south for the United States, any future transition from American hegemony might look a lot rockier
