With favourable conditions Northeast Monsoon is likely to remain active this week. The presence of 3 cyclonic circulations recycling moisture may potentially bring enhanced rainfall compared to model estimates. Once again places in interior TN may see much higher than normal for this time of the year. Next couple of days look good for coastal areas like Chennai to see moderate / heavy spell of rains during late night / early morning hours. Detailed post at chennairains.com/nem-2026-to…

Northeast Monsoon (NEM) rainfall not exactly an outlook, just a glimpse what can be expected in 2026.
-----------------------
El Niño is an important factor, but it does not determine the outcome of the Northeast Monsoon. The monsoon has its own way of unfolding, often throwing surprises and reminding us that every season has a story of its own
For reference, the seasonal NEM rainfall normal is 855 mm for Chennai and 445 mm for Tamil Nadu. Interestingly, historical comparisons suggest that around 85–90% of El Niño years have recorded above normal NEM rainfall. This is a historical tendency, not a guarantee of what any particular year will deliver.
A look back at some remarkable years
-------------
2015: Chennai recorded around 1,664 mm during the Northeast Monsoon, a season remembered for its catastrophic floods.
1997: Tamil Nadu recorded around 810 mm, setting a remarkable rainfall record that surpassed the previous benchmark from 1946.
1982: A contrasting year, with significant rainfall deficits across Chennai and Tamil Nadu.
One striking aspect of 1997 and 2015 is that their extraordinary rainfall outcomes were not simply a consequence of frequent cyclone activity. In particular, 1997 stands out for the scale of rainfall recorded across Tamil Nadu despite the relative lack of cyclonic activity.
What about the 2026 Northeast Monsoon?
-------------------------
The 2026 Pacific sea-surface temperature pattern shows a strong warm signal along the equatorial Pacific, consistent with El Niño conditions. However, history reminds us that we cannot assess the Northeast Monsoon by looking at El Niño alone.
The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is another important player, influencing the broader ocean-atmosphere environment. And then comes the kingmaker the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO).
King maker MJO
--------------
The MJO's presence over our basin during the past week is encouraging and we can see the Tamil Nadu rains this october from negative to positive with MJO's help . If it remains favourable and spends a meaningful amount of time over the Indian Ocean during November, it could support active spells of convection and rainfall over Tamil Nadu. Its movement and persistence will be crucial factors to watch.
My rainfall outlook for 2026
-----------------------------
Tamil Nadu: The season has the potential to finish above normal, possibly in the 470–520 mm range, compared with the normal of 445 mm.
Chennai (KTCC): Against a normal of 855 mm, the city has received approximately 230 mm so far. The coming days could help push the seasonal total towards or beyond 300 mm, depending on how the last week Low pressure play out, if it goes to North Andhra / Odisha, we might miss crucial spells.
1. Tamil Nadu, I do not expect 2026 to match the extraordinary rainfall totals of 2015, let alone approach the 1997 benchmark of 810 mm. A finish closer to 500 mm looks like a reasonable possibility at this stage.
2. KTCC (Chennai), however, the story could be different. A few intense, well-positioned rainfall events can dramatically change the seasonal tally. Crossing 1,000 mm is possible, although it would require favourable conditions to persist and some significant rainfall spells. Reaching the exceptional levels of 1,500 mm or more recorded in years such as 2015 and 1997 would be a much bigger challenge.
3. . South Tamil Nadu — El Niño years, South TN oda attam vera level!. Districts such as Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, Madurai and Ramanathapuram can perform very well during El Niño years, with several areas having the potential to record high excess rainfall. South Tamil Nadu is one of the regions I am optimistic about this season.
4.. West Tamil Nadu — The Kongu belt's only concern. Districts such as Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and other parts of the Kongu belt depend significantly on low-pressure areas and upper-air cyclonic circulations (UACs) moving from the Bay of Bengal across the peninsula towards the Arabian Sea. These systems can bring very good rainfall to the western districts. So watchout for +IOD which can lead to more systems in Arabian sea, which can help easterlies to Kongu belt. This region remains my main area of concern. However, years such as 1997 showed that the Kongu belt can perform exceptionally well. These districts have already started October with a bang, and I expect them to do well during the October 20–24 spell. Normal to slightly above-normal rainfall is a reasonable expectation for this region.
5. Interior Tamil Nadu — Many UACs could make the difference. From Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Tirupattur to Vellore, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai and other interior districts, rainfall often depends on the formation and movement of upper-air cyclonic circulations or weak ciruclations. Such systems are not uncommon during El Niño years. These districts, along with the Kongu belt, bore the brunt of hot spells and relatively poor rainfall during the Southwest Monsoon. However, the Northeast Monsoon offers a fresh opportunity. I expect most of these interior districts to receive normal to above-normal rainfall during NEM 2026, provided favourable circulations develop.
6. Delta and Cuddalore–Puducherry belt — The wettest zone of NEM!. From Cuddalore through the Delta districts towards Puducherry, this belt is among the most favoured regions during the Northeast Monsoon. No major surprises here I expect this region to perform very well, with the potential for at least 20% excess rainfall over the seasonal normal.
The Northeast Monsoon still has a long way to go. November, in particular, could be decisive. November forecast is looking good. As always, these are my current expectations based on the evolving climate and weather pattern, not a certainty as always NEM throws few surprises along the way and rains tell their own story.

Just wrapped up a 600 km weekend round trip on the expressway.
Hitting a straight 100–120 km/h strip makes you realize very quickly, it’s about predictability and self-sufficiency.
7 real-world rules every driver should follow to survive (and enjoy) long expressway runs:
1. Keep at Least 150 km of Fuel in Reserve
Don't assume fuel stations are every 10–20 km. On new expressways (like Delhi-Mumbai), pump gaps can stretch up to 70–80 km. If a pump is closed, out of stock, or facing a power cut, that reserve tank is your only insurance policy.
2. Never Pass an Operational Rest Stop Expecting a "Better One"
If you need a bathroom break, food, or stretch, take the next available rest area. Expressways are access-controlled deserts; skipping a designated food Plaza hoping for a cleaner eatery in 15 km can turn into a 100 km stretch of nothingness.
3. Treat the Shoulder as a Danger Zone. Not a Parking Bay
Never stop on the emergency shoulder. Heavy commercial vehicles and distracted drivers at 120 km/h often drift into shoulders. If you must stop, pull off completely into a designated wayside bay or exit ramp.
4. Wipe down Headlights and Windshields at Every Pitstop
Dead insects form a film on your windshield that creates blinding glare against oncoming headlights at night. Clean the glass and light lenses every time you stop for fuel.
5. Stop Camping in the Right Lane
The rightmost lane is strictly for overtaking. Sitting at 85 km/h in the fast lane forces faster traffic to pass from the left, creating blind-spot chaos. Cruise in the middle lane; use right lane only to overtake.
6. The Cold-Tire Pressure Trap
At sustained high speeds, continuous friction spikes tire temperature and internal pressure. Set your cold tire pressures accurately before starting. Under-inflated tires on hot tarmac generate excessive flex and heat; could lead to tyre burst.
7. Indicate 3 Seconds BEFORE You Turn the Wheel
Give traffic behind you time to see your signal, check your mirrors twice (especially the blind spot), and execute a smooth, linear lane change.
Expressways make distance easy, but high-speed momentum leaves zero margin for error.

Can anyone recommend a reliable app or website to find apartments for rent in Chennai
Also, pls list good residential areas around Guindy. Priorities are safety, affordability, easy access to the metro & less prone to waterlogging during the monsoon. Kindly RT if possible 🙏

How is this a fallacious argument? If the seizure had been made in an airport or major harbour we can accept that DRI had access to superior intelligence. But this has happened in a Tier 3 town like Nagapattinam where TN police, especially Coastal Security group 1/2
This is a fallacious argument. The seizure of 135 kg of amphetamines, a synthetic drug for which Tamil Nadu is a transit point for at least a decade, is made by central agency DRI which has superior investigation/detection skills as compared to TN police.
For example, during the 2021-26 DMK regime, DRI seized 36 kg of meth from a passenger at Madurai railway station; 10.13 kg from a vehicle near Potheri.
From a constructive point of view, Tamil Nadu police has to amp up its anti-drug trafficking probe, focussing on international networks, which the Greater Chennai Police during the DMK regime (incidentally under the much reviled Arun IPS) did with reasonable success.
As a central agency, DRI and NCB have wider resources to crack such larger cases.

Aduvana thappu solli solliyae munarum nenaikkum jeevan naan illai. I already have enough on my plate, with elderly parents to take care of and a job that is as hectic as it gets. All these posts, data compilation all done during my free time. Before passing judgmental comments, please remember that.
I am minding my own ways and choosing to ignore the negativity. I don't seek recognition, nor do I want to be the face on TV during heavy rainfall events. All the major news channels know this. I rarely accept TV interviews; only when they persistently request and it happens to be a leave day do I agree.
But I won't lie, a few encouraging and kind words from people keep me going. That's why I still try to read the comments.
To be honest, weather blogging isn't as enjoyable as it was in 2015. Those who have known me for a long time understand what is in my heart. Jealousy, the race to be the first to post, arguments over who is right, things have changed. The joy and spirit that once made this space special seem to be fading.
I would rather work behind the scenes, sharing my interpretations and making sure people and the Government can use them to the best of their ability. That is what matters to me, not publicity or recognition.
Regarding yesterday's rains: Yes, we had predicted that it was an ideal day for rainfall across North Tamil Nadu and Chennai. But if you had asked me yesterday morning whether Chennai could receive 300 mm of rain, I would have said there was a 0% chance. The broad setup was favourable, but the sheer magnitude of the rainfall was beyond what I expected.
Weather will always have its surprises. I will continue to share my interpretations honestly, acknowledge what I get right and what I don't.
