Nephrin Abs look promising, but evidence is limited. We need standardized assays and timing of detection. They may not explain all recurrent FSGS. Much more to learn about nephrin and its friends!

Wrapping up a wonderful afternoon at the ASN Nephrology Training Program Directors (TPDs) Meeting during ASN Kidney Week 2026 in Denver! 🏔️🫘 @ASNKidney
It was an absolute honor to serve as a panelist for the session, “From GFR to GPT: Filtering the Future of AI in Nephrology Training,” and to deliver my talk on “AI-Augmented, Not AI-Dependent: Guiding Nephrology Trainees in Clinical AI Use.”
We had a fantastic discussion exploring how AI can enhance nephrology education and clinical workflows while firmly preserving the critical thinking, independent clinical reasoning, and judgment that our trainees must develop.
A few key messages from our session:
🔹 Augment, Don't Replace:Automation can hide the learning. For a fellow, the clinical reasoning model is still being built. Efficiency matters, but cognitive development is an equally critical outcome of training.
🔹 Reduce Friction: We should deploy AI as a scribe or knowledge assistant to reduce administrative friction—not to outsource clinical judgment. Every AI output is simply a draft that a human still owns.
🔹 No Source, No Decision:Clinical recommendations must be grounded in verified evidence. A tool name is not evidence; if an AI output changes patient care, you must climb to the original primary source.
I am incredibly grateful to the American Society of Nephrology, our fantastic moderator Dr. Jon Webb, my fellow panelists (Dr. Lili Chan, Dr. Suzanne Boyle, and Dr. Maulin Shah), and all the training program directors for their thoughtful discussions and engagement today!
Our collective goal is clear: we must train the next generation of nephrologists to be AI-augmented, not AI-dependent.

Honored to have the opportunity to speak this morning at the MONDO (Monitoring Dialysis Outcomes) Meeting, held in conjunction with ASN Kidney Week 2026 in Denver! 🏔️🩺
It was a true pleasure to present:
“Artificial Intelligence in Nephrology: Where We Are, Emerging Opportunities, and Research Priorities.”
During our session, we explored:
🔹 Current State & Progress: Where AI is already moving from promise to practice across risk prediction, pattern recognition, and workflow support.
🔹 Emerging Opportunities: Harnessing longitudinal registries, multimodal data, and dynamic analytics to shift dialysis care from reactive troubleshooting toward proactive, personalized interventions.
🔹 Research Priorities: Focusing on external validation, calibration drift, equity, and seamless workflow integration to translate algorithms into measurable improvements in patient outcomes.
With MONDO representing over 41 countries, 20 years of longitudinal data, and more than 100 million dialysis sessions, the potential for international, collaborative data science to redefine kidney care is immense!
Great engagement, thoughtful questions, and stimulating discussions throughout the room. My sincere thanks to the MONDO consortium and the Renal Research Institute (RRI) teams—including Sheetal Chaudhuri and fellow session speakers—for the kind invitation, warm hospitality, and leadership in fostering global collaboration.
Looking forward to the continued conversations throughout Kidney Week! 🫘🤖

Kidney biopsy findings in a patient treated with complement inhibitor-pegcetacoplan. First one for me.
Glomeruli appear and vacuolated and washed out. The vacuoles are most prominent in the podocytes.
The interstitium also contains vacuolated cells.
Glomeruli appear non proliferative and were negative for Ig and C3 on Immunofluorescence.
However, there was extensive global glomerulosclerosis and tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis.

📚🙏🏻 Thank you to American Society of Nephrology (ASN) In The Loop for highlighting our article this morning! 😊
I am thrilled to see our newly published Perspective, now available ahead of print in Kidney360, featured by the American Society of Nephrology, ASN in the Loop. 🔁
“Artificial Intelligence in Nephrology Practice: Practical Pathways to Improve Efficiency”
In this piece, we explore practical opportunities to integrate AI into everyday nephrology workflows—supporting care before, during, and after the patient visit.
Our focus highlights how we can:
🔹 Improve Efficiency: Utilizing workflow AI to assemble information, draft documentation, and streamline routine clinical tasks to significantly reduce administrative burden.
🔹 Support Clinicians: Designing practical pathways that serve as a force multiplier for kidney care professionals.
🔹 Maintain Human Oversight: Ensuring that AI implementation remains responsible, with clinicians firmly at the center of verification and decision-making.
As the feature notes, our next priority as a field must be rigorous multicenter studies to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, workload impact, patient experience, and cost of these AI-enabled workflows.
A sincere thank you to my fantastic co-authors, Dr. Noppawit Aiumtrakul and Dr. Charat Thongprayoon, for this great collaboration! 🙏🏻 Thank you as well to @asnpublications for sharing this piece.
