One year ago today, my daughter, Evelyn (3 yo at the time), was hospitalized with a brain hemorrhage. It feels like that event sent the entire world off kilter (and with the insanity of 2020, it's hard to not think that it really did).

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Moving all Meta's iOS apps off `UIScreen.mainScreen` over the past 5 months was a prescient call.

“Miyamoto’s team had one phone photo’s worth of space” With advanced HEIF compression that’s 4284×5712 pixels and ends up being ~2.9MBs. So 40KB is one 70th of a phone photo. Even if you crank compression up, a good quality photo is going to be bare minimum of 10x more than 40KB

I am so sick of seeing this alert. Every time I get a text message and open Messages, there it is and I hit “Don’t Allow”.

AI coding negates 100% of the productivity boost from SwiftUI. You have my permission to migrate back to UIKit.

Anyone seeing App Updates not happening automatically (at least not at the pace they are used to), with or without BAR disabled?

Alright devs, now that we have an updated Clang it's time to take advantage of flags I've been waiting for decades for -- apply these 4 flags: -Wswitch -Wswitch-enum -Wswitch-default -Wno-covered-switch-default

With these in place you `switch` statements will be truly exhaustive. The compiler will force you to have every enum value have a `case` in the switch AND have a `default:` to to cover any integers that get through but are not an enum value. Huge code safety improvement.

RIP to Bill Atkinson, one of the greatest programmers who ever lived. At Apple he created MacPaint, QuickDraw, HyperCard and was a critical part of making the Macintosh magic. He co-founded General Magic - go watch that documentary.

I remember my step dad getting me Visual Studio back in the mid 90s to foster my obsession with computers to get into programming. It had a tome and only VS Basic was available.

But then, at the end of the semester, we got to do a project with Pascal. It changed my life. I loved it, it “fit” me, and it was all I wanted to do.

Programming might not be for everyone, but I do wonder how many more folks would actually excel if they got to the right “fit”, so that they got excited by programming. If all I knew of programming was VS Basic, I would never have pursued programming as a career.
