1/2 We're very happy to see The Wall Street Journal citing our data on maritime attacks in its latest coverage of the Iran war. Our @WashInstitute map (below) tracks maritime attacks and incidents in the MENA region since 2017. #Shipping #IranWar‌ wsj.com/world/middle-east/ta…

Dominguez: Freedom of navigation will return to normal after conflicts end ⚓️IMO chief says current threats to freedom of navigation are conflict-driven and temporary, and shipping will return to normal once hostilities end ⚓️Dominguez said multilateralism remains alive, with member states continuing to rally around the IMO to uphold shared principles ⚓️He urged ships to avoid conflict zones altogether to protect seafarers, arguing resulting supply shortages could pressure warring parties to end the conflicts lloydslist.com/articles/2026…

1/3 At least 28 ship attacks were reported and confirmed between Oct 1 and Oct 21. Every single attack and its details are on the interactive map by @WashInstitute in the next post. Tracking each attack since March 1. Verifying data with different sources, updating and sharing it here on X for 8 months so far. To those who follow me, and been using and sharing the map, and asking questions and quoting us: thank you friends and colleagues. #OOTT #Shipping #IranWar

3/3 @MarcusHand1 and I have done two podcast episodes so far for @Seatrade and since September, looking at Iran's maritime campaign and sharing trends and patterns, and what to expect next. Below is the latest that came out this week in which we discuss the surge in attacks in October. We also zoom in on Iraq. seatrade-maritime.com/securi… #Shipping #OOTT #IranWar

🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia's 1mn b/d Shaybah field has been targeted on numerous occasions in recent months. It was targeted on 3 consec days in March. The Houthis claimed an attack as recently as Monday. Houthis said the Monday attack was successful. Sources told Argus that was false.
NEW: 🇸🇦 Saudi energy ministry confirms drone strike targeting the 1mn b/d Shaybah oil field early on Wednesday. Says drones were intercepted, but debris from interception caused fire *outside the facility's perimeter* resulting in 2 deaths and 2 injuries. Operations unaffected.

The Iran war "has amplified Iraq’s longstanding energy problems, and this issue will need extra U.S. attention as Washington seeks to transition the bilateral relationship from a security focus to a partnership based on economic cooperation," writes @NoamRaydan. washingtoninstitute.org/poli…

A perfect example of false information. First, this is a bulk carrier and not a tanker. Second, this ship is the victim of a collision based on the damage. Note there is no burn or blast damage and the hull rupture is vertical.

"At least 28 reported and confirmed attacks so far in October in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waterways." #oott
The two ship attacks reported by UKMTO were against Liberia-flagged oil products tanker Soyia ( (IMO 9263916), around 30NM southeast of Al Faw, Iraq, and the Kuwait-flagged crude oil tanker Al Dasma (IMO 9653446), around 11NM west of Bukha, Oman. The ships have been identified by maritime security firms including Vanguard. We will add these attacks soon to the @WashInstitute interactive map below, which tracks maritime attacks in the MENA region since 2017. Link to the map to view previous attacks: washingtoninstitute.org/mena… (Use the map on a computer monitor; it has not yet been adapted for phone screens.) Review my thread below regarding the ship attacks and what to expect next. I discussed Iraq at length in a recent podcast episode with @Seatrade ‘s @MarcusHand1
October is March on steroids. 1/5 Here’s my latest podcast with @MarcusHand1, in which I provide an in-depth analysis of the latest ship attacks in the Strait of Hormuz & surrounding waterways. This follows an episode in Sept in which I warned of further Iranian escalation. Keep reading for a summary of my points from the podcast, and a chart: seatrade-maritime.com/securi… #Shipping #OOTT #IranWar @Seatrade

2/5 I looked at the data for March, and we had at least 19 confirmed attacks for the full month (excluding incidents such as hailing or splashes on water near a commercial ship from unknown projectile). In October, we are still in the middle of the month, and we have already recorded at least 23 confirmed attacks - that’s only for the period between October 1 and October 13. So October, in other words, is March on steroids. I created the chart below to show you all the data I have since March. We at @WashInstitute have been tracking the attacks since day one using various sources. We take our time to update the map each time to make sure we are capturing everything that's available and confirmed (unverfied claims never make it to the map or to my posts).

4/5 All this data is based on the work I have been doing for @WashInstitute , where I lead with a team the map below, which tracks maritime attacks in the MENA region since 2017. This morning, we updated the map with all recent confirmed attacks. Those who follow me know that this is what I have been doing and posting about for months now amid the Iran war: tracking ship attacks and assessing the implications for shipping and energy in the region. Link to the map: washingtoninstitute.org/mena… (Use the map on a computer monitor; it has not yet been adapted for phone screens.) #Shipping

5/5 In addition to discussing the latest ship attacks in the region in the @Seatrade podcast below with Marcus Hand , I zoom in on Iraq since the latest attacks come amid the gradual recovery in the region’s crude exports, including those from Iraq, OPEC’s second-largest oil producer. Iraq is among the most vulnerable exporters and deserves more attention given its internal challenges amid the region’s shipping and energy crisis. seatrade-maritime.com/securi… #Iraq #Shipping

Ship attacks & incidents in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waterways between Oct 10 and Oct 13: At least 10 ship attacks occurred during this short period. Overall more than 20 ship attacks & incidents have been recorded so far this month. We have added and updated many entries using different sources. All the details are in the @WashInstitute interactive map which tracks maritime attacks in the MENA region since 2017. Link to the map: washingtoninstitute.org/mena… The video below shows you some of the attacks that took place recently and how to search for them. I will share more information at a later stage. Thanks to all those who use and cite the map. (Use the map on a computer monitor; it has not yet been adapted for phone screens.) #Shipping #OOTT #IranWar‌

Brief note: Over 20 ship attacks have been recorded in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waterways since Sept 28. Most involved tankers. This month alone (Oct), there have been at least 18 ship attacks, plus at least two hailing incidents. These figures include the time-late reports posted by UKMTO and others. UKMTO isn’t the only entity receiving time-late reports. The latest attacks will be added to the @WashInstitute map soon. In the meantime, check the interactive map in yesterday’s thread below for other details. This map tracks maritime attacks and incidents in the MENA region since 2017. #Shipping #OOTT #IranWar‌
To those who followed my thread earlier: India's ministry of external affairs said today (Oct 11) there was an attack against Nicaragua-flagged Petro Dolphin (1072294). Earlier, Ambrey reported an attack against a Nicaragua-flagged oil products tanker off Sohar, Oman. Based on the latest from the Indian authorities, the tanker that was attacked off Sohar appears to have been the Petro Dolphin. Unfortunately, 2 Indian seafarers are missing. The tanker appears to be falsely flagged to Nicaragua. I updated this attack on the @WashInstitute interactive map: washingtoninstitute.org/mena… If more details emerge, we will update. As always, we are adhereing to confirmed information from multiple sources. (Use the map on a computer monitor; it has not yet been adapted for phone screens.) #Shipping #OOTT #IranWar‌
