Have you heard of the Marine Mail Guards before?
In October 1926, President Coolidge ordered 2,500 Marines to guard US Mail after the brutal robbery and murder of a US Mail truck driver. The 4th Marines were spread throughout 12 states. These armed Marines became a sobering sight throughout Post Offices, mail trains, and mail trucks. Only one robbery was attempted while Marines guarded US mail. The Mail Guards returned to normal duty on 10 January 1927 as the force was disbanded.

Before there were aisles full of pop culture costumes, Halloween was a homemade affair. In the early 1900s, people crafted their disguises from scraps, paper, fabric, and imagination. The idea wasn’t to mimic a movie character but to transform into something unrecognizable. Many of these early costumes were inspired by folklore, spirits, and superstition. Looking back now, they carry an eerie charm and remind us that the scariest costumes don’t come from stores, they come from creativity.

#OTD in 1951, the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge concluded, marking the end of a grueling month-long conflict during the Korean War. Spanning from September 13th to October 15th, this battle unfolded along a winding front line running east to west, a few miles north of the 38th parallel, through the heart of the Korean peninsula.
UN and communist forces, engaged in a series of intense and bloody clashes as they jockeyed for control of the twisting terrain. After a relentless 30 days of combat, American and French forces ultimately gained the upper hand, successfully securing Heartbreak Ridge. However, this achievement came at a considerable cost.
Despite their triumph, Sherman tanks struggled to advance through the treacherous Mundung-ni Valley, with 38 armored vehicles destroyed and nine damaged in the process. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, with over 3,700 American and French soldiers lost and an estimated 25,000 North Korean and Chinese casualties.
The profound impact of these losses resonated deeply with the UN and US command, leading to a strategic shift. They recognized that battles like Heartbreak Ridge, though significant, often came at too high a human toll for the relatively modest territorial gains achieved. This realization prompted a shift toward more cautious and deliberate tactics involving air support, artillery, and infantry, culminating in the eventual capture of Heartbreak Ridge in October 1951.

#OTD in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was shot at close range by anarchist William Schrenk. He was saved by the papers in his breast pocket and still managed to give an 84-minute address in Milwaukee. He began, “Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible.” His second line, however, was a bombshell. “I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot.” He then stated, “It takes more than that to kill a bull moose," and pulled his 50-page speech out of his pocket, which had slowed the bullet.

#OTD in 1951, the first battalion-sized combat helo-lift occurred. A Marine battalion was flown by transport helicopters to a frontline combat position for the first time, when HMR-161 lifted the 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, and its equipment, during Operation Bumblebee, northeast of Yanggu, Korea.
#OTD in 1845, through the efforts of the SECNAV, George Bancroft, the Naval School (later renamed the United States Naval Academy) was established without Congressional funding. The academy was located at a 10-acre Army post named Fort Severn in Annapolis, Maryland, & began with a class of 50 midshipmen and seven professors.

#OTD in 1918, Sgt. Alvin C. York almost single-handedly killed 25 German soldiers and captured 132 in the Argonne Forest in France. York is one of the most decorated Soldiers of WWI. Corporal Alvin C. York’s platoon was advancing toward a railway when they were hit with machinegun fire from all sides. Men from York's platoon captured one gun, but the noise drew the fire of the remaining German emplacements, killing six and seriously wounding three Americans. As the most senior of the remaining men, York went out alone to engage the enemy with just his rifle and revolver, picking off the machine gunners one by one. When the fighting was over, York had single-handedly eliminated 35 machine guns, killed more than 20 Germans, and taken the 132 remaining as prisoners. York, a modest man, shrugged off actions, saying, “It’s over; let’s forget it.”

On October 7, 1943, Rear Adm. Shigematsu Sakaibara, commander of the Japanese garrison on the island, ordered the execution of 98 American POWs after accusing them of attempting to establish radio contact with U.S. forces. The Japanese forces on the island had become overwhelming, leading to the transfer of most surviving Americans to other POW camps. However, 98 were left behind for forced labor.
The 98 American POWs were blindfolded and executed in cold blood, leaving an indelible mark as one of the most horrifying events of the Pacific War. Today we honor their memories.
