George Orwell worked for the BBC for 2 years and didn’t particularly enjoy it. But at the end he told his boss that no one had ever asked him to broadcast anything he didn’t believe. I’ve now worked for it for 60 years, and can honestly say exactly the same thing.
Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year.
“We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.”

Last week, Anthropic made an unexpected announcement: all text created using Claude, the company’s large language model, would now contain an invisible watermark. If a person were to copy and paste a chatbot-crafted passage into a separate document, an A.I. detector would be able to determine the likelihood that it had been generated by Claude. The company claimed that it made the change to comply with “transparency obligations” outlined in a new A.I. act from the European Union. But can a cryptographical signal really make our writing landscape more candid? Brady Brickner-Wood considers Anthropic’s motives, and the possible effects of this new measure—from more public shaming to increased A.I. surveillance. newyorker.com/culture/infini…

Mykhailo Fedorov releases an explosive video statement on the eve of parliament vote in which a new defense minister was expected to be rubber stamped by Zelenskyy ruling party, calling for elections, raising alarm about corruption and warning that, “People cannot endlessly live in a state where they do not understand why certain decisions are made” — alluding to the opaque recent government reshuffle.
A key portion of his speech tonight:
Democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia.
We are fighting precisely because we want to remain a free European state.
Therefore, we must find a legal, safe, and realistic mechanism that will allow Ukraine to restore a full democratic process even amidst a prolonged war.
This is complex.
We need to guarantee the voting rights of our military.
Of millions of Ukrainians abroad.
Of people in frontline regions.
We need to ensure the security of the electoral process, the independence of institutions, and trust in the outcome.

If I were to describe the full extent of russian brutality, I would be banned by this platform. So, I am just going to leave the text from one of my acquaintances:
“Met a doctor in Kyiv that has been working in the liberated areas of Kherson that Russians occupied for 7 months.
She said, they had little girls that had been so brutally sexually assaulted that there is no longer a separation between anus and vagina. As doctors they had never seen anything like it and there is nothing they can do to help.
When some in the West say Ukraine should surrender, this is what we'd be surrendering to.”

A glorious day for opponents of transparency in public life.
MPs have removed the names of their parliamentary staff from a decades-old public register - meaning we do not know who these people are and are left to accept the word of their employer when they say (as in the case of the prime minister, here) that said staff do not have any outside earnings or private interests.
"All staff have confirmed they have no registrable interests": oh, well that's that then.
No way of determining if true; no way of finding out if MPs employing family members; no way for anyone other than MPs themselves to uphold standards or examine who is operating in the Palace of Westminster on their behalf.
The decision was driven by ... you guessed it ... MPs themselves, following behind-closed-door consultations with staff trade union representatives - not media or anti-corruption organisations.
Echoes of the time that decided among themselves - with nil meaningful debate - to exempt themselves from the centuries-old system by which those arrested would be named before the Commons.
Parliament being sovereign it is always free to take such steps without consultation or engagement with the public - the hope is they decide not to abuse their positions and proactively seek criticism or counter-views.
In this instance, sadly, MPs have demonstrated they cannot be trusted to do so - they have put us out of step with comparable democracies without anything approaching scrutiny:
New: In another backwards step for transparency, the names of parliamentary staff no longer appear online

40 years ago I began my Russian Studies degree course at the University of Leeds. The era of perestroika & glasnost. At night, on a short wave radio, I’d listen to music from the USSR. I can still remember some of the melodies, some of the music that struck a chord.
With the words “Someone who had hated the Kremlin’s special services since his childhood in Soviet-bloc Bulgaria”, I thought I knew what was coming over the page. But no, I really didn’t see this description of 14-year-old @christogrozev coming 👇
