For more than 800 years, frequent low-temperature cultural burning kept part of south-eastern Australia as stable, open woodland. After that management was disrupted, hot fire became dominant, shrubs thickened and eucalypt cover rose nearly fourfold.
New research in @Nature finds this transformation began before anthropogenic warming, leaving a more flammable landscape that climate change now intensifies.
The study strengthens the case for treating wildfire as a land-management problem as well as a climate problem: fuel loads and vegetation structure are both key.

One moorland wildfire demanded a 40-day response from North Yorkshire crews.
The 25 sq km Langdale Moor fire placed sustained pressure on full-time and on-call firefighters, affecting other employment and operational availability while emergency cover still had to be maintained.
A new report recommends better relief and rotation arrangements for long-running incidents.

I’m not the best of shots, but for an old bloke with no toes and hardly any fingers, I do ok. I do get frustrated however by folk who think they can shoot, never practise and then complain in the field…

Mountaineering in 1895.
Mountaineers dressed in woollen jackets, tweed breeches, long stockings and sturdy leather boots, often topped with a wool or felt hat. They carried heavy hemp ropes and wooden-shafted ice axes, for the Victorian adventurer, the mountains represented something more than a holiday, they were a place of challenge, exploration and adventure.

I'm not a big believer in activism. I much prefer education, hence I have worked with engineering and educational bodies for many years. I've also spent much of my life connected to farming and fieldsports..🧵
I know that some folk don't like my stance (i'm presently embroiled with preserving a lane near me), but I believe that education is a better learning medium than stamping your feet and screaming like a child...
Balanced reason, real science and listening to rural voices will hopefully bring the change that the nation needs, rather than headline grabbing fundraisers and accusations...
