Carly Ryan was 15.
She thought she was talking to an 18-year-old musician named “Brandon.”
He didn’t exist.
Behind the profile was 50-year-old Garry Francis Newman.
He spent months grooming her online, then showed up in person pretending to be the boy’s father.
In February 2007, he lured her to Port Elliot, South Australia.
He assaulted her.
He k!lled her. 💔
Her body was found in the water.
Newman was convicted of her murder and sentenced to life with a 29-year non-parole period. After the verdict he admitted what he did. His appeal was dismissed.
Carly’s mother refused to let that be the end of the story. She built the Carly Ryan Foundation so other parents would know what a fake profile can hide.

Kendrick Morris was 16 on April 24, 2008, when Queena Phu, 18, went to the Bloomingdale library to drop off a book. He dragged her behind the building and r*ped her.

He beat her until she was blind and paralyzed. She still cannot speak or feed herself and needs round-the-clock care.

DNA also tied him to a 2007 armed r*pe of a 62-year-old daycare worker in Clair-Mel. A Hillsborough County jury convicted him in 2011 and Judge Chet Tharpe imposed 65 years.

Juvenile sentencing rulings later opened a resentencing door. Morris asked to cut that term.

On March 9, 2017, Tharpe went the other way. "These crimes were particularly atrocious and cruel," the judge said.

"Life sentences are the only appropriate sentences in this case."

The Florida Department of Corrections still lists him as sentenced to life at South Bay Correctional Facility. A review date was set for 2031.

"I want to say it's a victory, but it seems wrong to say that," sister Anna Donato said. "I believe that justice was served."
