Somerset Council became a Unitary Authority under the last Conservative government. That meant it was done with discussion, debate and compromise but with a carefully-drafted business case to make it work. Now as it happens it all unravelled pretty fast because the Lib Dem’s, who had opposed it, were voted in as the administration, didn’t know what to do, didn’t work with our ongoing Cllrs who had the vision and the plan and it has not been the success it should have been. They’ve been disastrous for Somerset in fact. Then look at Labour’s bull-in-a-china-shop approach to this which has been so messy, so unnecessarily disruptive and has, in combination with their punitive removals of funding and support, left authorities up and down the country in turmoil. I get that there are people who are still not ready to accept that the Conservatives have changed and still need convincing that we will be better for Britain but this is another example of how the Conservatives make plans, think through the difficulties and recognise that just saying you’ll do it isn’t enough.
