Chris Fowler said “It’s not the SEC environments we saw earlier today but still great none the less” after the first BYU drive in case you want to know if they are in the SEC’s pocket. Or I guess if the SEC is in theirs.
I knew they were in trouble the second I saw this. What would his father Nick Saban say?

Reality check: CFB fans are actually most nostalgic about the sport before the portal, NIL, & realignment, not the postseason format.
A 24-team playoff isn’t ruining college football.
I'm planting my flag atop this hill and I'm not budging.
The 24-team College Football Playoff is awesome!
And I'm here to stand in opposition to decades of gaslighting leading fans to believe an acutal playoff would ruin the "sacred" regular season when the exact opposite is true.
College football games are awesome because we love college football, not because of the playoff implications. Army-Navy hasn't been nationally relevant since black and white TV, but we watch because we love it!
Now, we will get better games with more of them carrying actual postseason weight. And instead of relying on a group of self-important nerds in a hotel ballroom debating defensive efficiency metrics to tell us who is worthy of entry, we will have actual games on the field to determine outcomes.
They told you the BCS would ruin college football.
They told you a four-team CFP would do the same.
Rinse and repeat with 12. Now 24.
We all still love college football just as much as we did when they told you how awesome it was to win the Car Quest Bowl.
I know roughly 1% of you will agree with this, but overcoming decades of brainwashing is difficult.
This is a great thing for our sport.
My current pet peeve, which is driving me up a wall, is the flood of epistemic circularity from people attempting to backtest new playoff formats against historical rankings. We need to get back to using our brains people.

This. We don’t need G5 autobids for a handout. We need them because we can’t trust the committee to act in good faith.
Based on a large sample size, about three G5 teams should make a 24 team playoff any given year, based on their own merit. Most people would be fine with that representation
Someone has a lot of explaining to do if that number consistently drops to 1 with no rhyme or reason
This almost certainly will change, but I went back through every CFP ranking from 2014–2025 to see which G5 programs finished the regular season ranked in the Top 24, before conference championship weekend.
Here's who theoretically would have qualified under a format with one guaranteed G6 bid and 23 at-large selections:
2014 (1 team)
• Boise State (#22) AQ
2015 (3 teams)
• Houston (#19) AQ
• Temple (#22)
• Navy (#23)
2016 (3 teams)
• Western Michigan (#17) AQ
• Navy (#19)
• Houston (#24)
2017 (2 teams)
• UCF (#14) AQ
• Memphis (#20)
2018 (2 teams)
• UCF (#8) AQ
• Boise State (#22)
2019 (5 teams)
• Memphis (#17) AQ
• Boise State (#19)
• Cincinnati (#20)
• Appalachian State (#21)
• Navy (#24)
2020 (5 teams)
• Cincinnati (#9) AQ
• Coastal Carolina (#12)
• Louisiana (#19)
• Tulsa (#23)
• San José State (#24)
2021 (4 teams)
• Cincinnati (#4) AQ
• San Diego State (#19)
• Houston (#21)
• Louisiana (#24)
2022 (2 teams)
• Tulane (#18) AQ
• UCF (#22)
2023 (2 teams)
• Tulane (#22) AQ
• Liberty (#24)
2024 (3 teams)
• Boise State (#10) AQ
• UNLV (#20)
• Army (#24)
2025 (2 teams)
• Tulane (#20) AQ
• North Texas (#24)
I am fascinated to see how the P4 changes the way ranking and the CFP votes on the top 25 to ensure this doesn't happen.

The format of the 24 team playoff is WAY more important than the number of teams. They have an opportunity to create a TRUE playoff. Will they do it? Or continue with this sham invitational they're been running for the last decade
Join a conference, win the conference. Not that hard. If you refuse to then shut the hell up.

There is no proper way to do a 24-team playoff as the whole idea is ludicrous.
But if you’re gonna do it, there should be 10 automatic bids for conference champions. That’s still gives room for 14 at-large spots. However, we all know that’s never gonna happen.

I gotta say, after watching the game again, I just gotta tip my cap to Scott Frost. Coach Cassity did everything he was supposed to do. He had very good base plans and adjusted as fast as you could. UCF just simply came prepared to make the defense wrong no matter what they did.
Their counter flow concepts in the run game were fantastic, and then, right about when you sniffed them out, they added a pass prong. And Coach Frost did a masterful job of "marrying" his pass game to the run game to give a QB who isn't a sophisticated passer fairly easy throws. As a result, 10 different Knights caught passes, and that kind of balance means they had options based on anything the defense could have presented.
The "mesh" concepts, and then how they added to them, the window dressing, the motions, and the million different ways they lined down their handful of concepts made it look very complicated for the defense, but kept it fairly simple for a beat-up offense. So, that allowed them to play fast and decisive, and, for the most part, unforced error-free.
And Coach Frost dialed up first-down plays to keep his team ahead of the chains, then on the "money downs" he had man beaters ready to go.
OSU could have played better defensively in some areas and on some plays, you always can. But overall, I came away MUCH more impressed with the UCF offense than I was in anything the OSU defense did.
I don't know anything about the type of head coach Scott Frost is, because there is a lot more to it than just calling good plays on offense. But I will say this: if Saturday is the norm for him, he's about as good of a play caller as I've seen that OSU has had to face.
Hats off to Coach Frost... Well done, Sir!

It’s less about the lack of knowledge to me and more about the dismissive nature and almost making fun of the smaller schools. You can’t do a thoughtful piece about Dante Reno at Yale to attempt to show compassion (and add viewers) and then pseudo mock Sac State or emphasize how unimportant Boise State and Fresno State are by bragging you don’t even know what conference they are in.
