Nearly every day, people released from the Santa Fe jail walk miles along a highway to get home.
Local leaders have known for 20+ years that it's dangerous but have done almost nothing about it.
We've uncovered just how deadly the consequences have been. nytimes.com/2025/05/12/us/ja…

i liked the subway poetry more when it was on a physical poster, and less so when it's on a digital screen that changes to a bank commercial or hard seltzer ad when you're halfway through the poem

Nearly every day toward the end of my tenure at The Washington Post, someone would complain to me about Jeff Bezos' changes. His decimation of the local news team. His abandonment of DC sports coverage. The shriveled Bezos opinion page, with the ideological diversity of a doorknob.
Today, The Washington Sun launches. It has made enormous new investments: +110 newsroom staff; DC's legendary food columnist; truly the best DMV reporters; a beloved weather blog; a growing roster of columnists; tons of worldclass reporters across many national beats; and also me.
The Washington Sun will not be perfect. We will write stories that you find annoying, dumb, or misinformed. I will make mistakes (& tell me if I do - [email protected]!). But at a time where investments in reporting are evaporating, I'm so excited The Sun is hiring real journalists doing real reporting.
If you want to help, I would love if you signed up for our (free!) newsletters, which routinely get genuinely rave reviews:

Very distressed to learn this week about the allegation that The New York Times is callously refusing to let a software engineer work from home so that he can take care of his ailing 96yo father.
NYT now fighting employee in court. Why? Extremely sad.

Among those killed in Kuhestak was Amir-Mohammad Karimi, a 6-year-old who was starting kindergarten, according to his mother. (Initially reported 4yo Amir-Ali. Interview w/ mother corrected that.) His face matches a video of a dead body inside morgue. instagram.com/p/DcxYw2assvZ/

Jordan Salinas almost never left home without his pistol for the last five years. His dad thought it was a bit ridiculous.
Then a gunman went on a rampage at an In-N-Out in Idaho, and Jordan became a town hero.
