Pat Buchanan, 1999:
“By moving NATO onto Russia’s front porch, we have scheduled a twenty-first century confrontation. … America will face a hellish dilemma: risk confrontation with a nuclear-armed Russia determined to recreate its old sphere of influence, or renege on solemn commitments and see NATO collapse.”
Therefore, he said, “Offering NATO memberships to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and, as some urge, Ukraine is rashness bordering on madness.” Referring to maps the Clinton team must have ignored, Buchanan warned, “This would put the Russian base at Kaliningrad behind NATO lines and bring into a U.S.-led alliance three nations with huge Russian minorities.” Foreseeing future conflict, he observed that “Latvia is almost half Russian; eastern Ukraine, almost entirely Russian. America could neither defend nor liberate these nations without the risk of nuclear war.”

CHART OF THE DAY: Europe (EU+UK) is buying near record amount of diesel from US refiners, leaving the region quite vulnerable to White House's policy. (The chart is with monthly data up to July, and probably August and September data would be higher.)

Europe is finding itself sandwiched from all sides when it comes to refined products — diesel in particular (some of the damage is due to the US-Iran war; some is due to Ukraine-Russia; some is due to China, and a lot is self-inflicted). Policy response: Head in the sand.

.@TheMichaelEvery The more I see in the news about Trump's Diesel Export ban since we discussed it in our Part 2 interview, the more suspicious I become that he never seriously intended to impose the ban, but knows how to play it as a threat.
Michael, any thoughts on whether this has all been 'diesel ban statecraft'? i.e. talk it up like tariffs as a threat to EU governments to play ball with him or face a possible dire consequence, despite knowing better than to actually pull the trigger.
MacroVoices @ErikSTownsend & @PatrickCeresna welcome back Michael Every @TheMichaelEvery . They discuss how Iran's threats to extend its strikes into the Indian Ocean and a possible 90-day U.S. diesel export ban could deepen the energy crisis, why Washington is rallying allies like Canada and Latin America into a U.S.-led bloc against a China–Russia–Iran–North Korea axis, and how fears of a 2027 Taiwan move, AI supremacy, and tactical nuclear escalation are reshaping markets, capital flows, and national security.

We're experimenting with a new format this week. There are TWO @TheMichaelEvery interviews this week. Part 1 is in Thursday's flagship @MacroVoices pod, then there's another full hour in a Macrovoices Unplugged episode that was released Friday.
Both episodes are live now on your favorite podcast app.
MacroVoices @ErikSTownsend & @PatrickCeresna welcome Michael Every @TheMichaelEvery. They discuss how escalating Iran–Middle East and Russia–Ukraine conflicts are weaponizing energy markets, why a looming global diesel crunch could fracture the “one-world” oil system into U.S.-led regional blocs, and how Washington may increasingly use tools like export bans, Arctic basing rights, and even dollar stablecoins as instruments of geopolitical statecraft against China and other rivals. bit.ly/4iRZKlX
