Dame Edna glanced at Judi Dench and Sharon Osbourne, both dressed dark, and asked what funeral they’d just been to completely straight-faced, as if she was genuinely checking in.
She didn’t wait for the laugh or a signal it was a joke. She just kept going while they were still processing it.
The insult only works because she delivers it like ordinary small talk. By the time everyone catches the implication, she’s already somewhere else.
You and Yours is often mildly brilliant. And @wrobinson101 no-shite delivery is wonderfully refreshing in a radio world where ‘experts’ can sound far too excited about absolutely everything.

Just seen a dark fruit cake for sale in a shop window that sells cakes, it was clearly a Christmas cake and yet this is what we have become - a country that calls a fruit cake a fruit cake. If my aunt were alive, she would die on the spot.

The Old Cornish Accent:
This video is a wonderful view into the old Cornish accent and spirit. This fascinating interview of 77 year old Cornish maid Emanda Billings in 1964 is a great insight into the everyday life of our recent ancestors. She was born in Victorian England (1800s), a world in which we've lost all connection.
The Cornish accent (also called Anglo-Cornish or Cornu-English) developed as local Celtic speakers shifted to English between 1300 and 1750, adopting regional West Country English while keeping a strong Brittonic language substrate. ⏳️

Grateful to @BBC @BBCRadio4 Last Word for featuring my father, Professor Cyril Hilsum, who was instrumental in inventing the screen on which you’re reading this. And he lived to 101 on a diet of red wine and chocolate.

One of the very best sets ever in film - the giant typewriter from 1937s "Ready, Willing, and Able".. Lee Dixon and Ruby Keeler - and a bevy of beautiful legs, type out a fantasy letter.. The routine was choreographed by Bobby Connolly (who later choreographed The Wizard of Oz). However, it heavily borrowed from the " Busby Berkeley Style" that dominated Warner Bros. musicals at the time.
It remains one of the most delightful sequences in film, and is a personal favorite of mine!

In 2001, American firefighter Gary Box vanished without a trace during the 9/11 attacks; his remains have never been found.
His parents spent nine long years searching for any sign of him. Finally, in 2009, his mother discovered a photograph at once heartbreaking and a source of relief in the National 9/11 Museum’s photo archives and on the memorial's official website; the firefighter captured in the image was indeed him.
The photo was taken on September 11, 2001, by Danish businessman Erik Thorsen. While stuck in traffic at the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, he looked through his windshield and captured the image of Gary rushing toward the Twin Towers. He later uploaded the photo to the National 9/11 Museum’s online archive, making this long delayed "reunion" possible. #USA911 #USFirefighter

The Last Night of the Proms was always a highlight of Dad’s professional year. Here he is on the BBC’s coverage in 1993. He rarely wore the Garrick tie on air - but it does go frightfully well with the carnation buttonhole
Michael Hingson was on the 78th floor of the North Tower on September 11, 2001.
He has been blind since birth.
His guide dog, Roselle, was under his desk when the plane hit.
The building lurched.
Smoke filled the offices.
People shouted.
Roselle stood, calm, and waited for the harness.
They went into Stairwell B and started down. Seventy-eight floors.
Firefighters passed them going up.
Jet fuel burned in the air.
A woman stopped, too afraid to keep walking.
Hingson talked her forward.
Roselle never pulled away, never panicked, never stopped.
They reached the lobby and then the street.
Minutes later the South Tower fell and a wall of dust rolled over them.
Roselle kept leading.
Hingson lived.
Roselle lived.
They walked out of a building that would not be standing an hour later.
He has spent the years since telling the story not as a miracle of sight, but as a story of trust: a man who could not see the stairs, and a dog who did not need to be told that the only way out was down.
Remember Michael Hingson.
Remember Roselle.
Remember everyone who started down those stairs and never reached the street.

Richard O'Sullivan was a huge part of British film and television and a Corona Academy alumni - any former Corona kids will recall how Rona Knight loved him, she bloomed with pride whenever his name was mentioned at school. What a star he was.
