Britain's first poppies weren't made in Britain. ๐ซ๐ท
In 1921, every one was shipped over from France. ๐ข
Back home, thousands of men had come back from the trenches without an arm, a leg or an eye. Many couldn't find work. ๐
One wounded officer, Major George Howson, had an idea. Britain's poppies, made by Britain's wounded. ๐บ
He wrote home: "I do not think it can be a great success. But it is worth trying." โ๏ธ
In June 1922, five disabled men sat down at a bench on the Old Kent Road. ๐ช
Within two months, they'd made a million. ๐คฏ
By 1924, twenty-seven million. Enough for more than half the people in Britain. ๐ฌ๐ง
A century later, veterans there still make the royal wreaths laid at the Cenotaph. ๐๏ธ
So now, when you put yours on, you can also remember where it came from. ๐
We will remember them. ๐บ

Today is Remembrance Sunday. This wonderful film clip is from the Cenotaph in the 1940s and is in colour. The music is Sir Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, Nimrod, arranged for the piano.
Hat tip @bo66ie29 who has some great videos.

๐นFew moments in television are as profoundly moving as the final scene of #Blackadder Goes Forth.
The laughter falls silent. Our heroes go over the top. And the battlefield fades into a field of poppies.
A heartbreaking reminder of a generation lost.
