A board that genuinely cares about improving a football club will support its manager in signing quality players and weeding out deadweights. Have INEOS and the Glazer family behaved like people genuinely interested in helping Manchester United regain its former glory? Have they signed the players capable of taking the club there? Have they appointed the right managers to steer the team towards success? And when they have appointed such managers, have they consistently given them the support they need? What, ultimately, has been their attitude towards underperforming players? These are the issues. A board that genuinely wants its team to improve will do whatever is necessary, within the law, (and sometimes, outside of it as we have seen with Manchester City) to make that improvement possible, and that includes recruiting the players the manager needs to build a successful team. When PSG signed Luis Enrique, he was given the backing to do away with players he didn't want and bring in those he did. The club committed itself to building the team he envisioned, backed his footballing philosophy and gave him the tools to implement it. Today, PSG have won successive Champions League titles and are gunning for a third. Has INEOS or the Glazer family supported Carrick in the same way? And if Carrick is not the man for the job, why was he hired in the first place? These are the questions we should be asking. Until INEOS and the Glazer family start treating this club with the honesty and seriousness it deserves, we will, sadly, remain exactly where we are.
