The last daily Evening Standard went to print today. I’ll be hanging around for a few more weeks but the new look Standard will do just fine without an Arts Correspondent. It’s been an honour and a total delight for most of my almost decade in the job and I’ll miss it. 1/5

theguardian.com/lifeandstyle… I know the format doesn’t allow for follow up questions but I mean! “When I did ballet, my father, who was also really practical, used to take me down to the garage and pull out my big toenails with a pair of pliers because I wanted to get a better point”

This reminds me of the time I got the lead story on the South London Press diary page when I was offered the latest Martin Amis in a rapidly gentrifying Battersea pub. Made a change from steak knives.
“Yeah I can get you a Sally Rooney”

Haven’t been to Camden in 10 years. Am in the Good Mixer and they’re playing Park Life.

Away from the obvious this is also a good thing for those of us who still want a bit of scruffiness and rough edges in the prime real estate of central London.

I had a brief stint as a crime fiction reviewer and started recycling proofs because I had so many of them
We have to get over the idea that books are precious. Throwing away a copy of a mass produced book is not sacrilege. It's just practical.

Being a reporter for so long I was too poor to be a completist in books or music. But if I was going to be it would the books of Ross Thomas so delighted to have picked this limited edition oddity up cheaply.

Can’t imagine which DCMS minister would have said this 🤔
A minister of the Crown sidles up and notes how perfick it would be if Spencer's book were outsold by the new biography of Dame Barbara Cartland (mother of Raine, to whom he was so beastly).

I’m pretty sure there was a mayor in Spain who stayed holed up for 40 odd years until Franco died
An insane story of a man who spent 13 years hidden behind a wall in his own house in western Syria to avoid Assad's security forces. (We've had this for days and held it while we substantiated parts of it. @newlinesmag videographer @subhash_anagha)

This was rather brilliant. A proper look into a world not often looked at
I wrote a long read for the Guardian about the evolution of the British trap house, focusing on the story of a friend of mine who was 'cuckooed' twice in London. The first time was grim, but the second cuckooing sparked a fascinating friendship. theguardian.com/news/ng-inte…

“Science fiction”
... seriously? This from some "creative writing" course or other. I have frequently said that creative writing classes mostly serve to stifle actual creativity, and this right here is exhibit fucking A. Oops, used foul language, I get an F.

Thought this was Paul Calf at first glance
Like drinking, like a laugh, chat, you know - bit of a debate, argument, scrap, fight, punch up, break some bloke's nose. I like life!

Has been perilously thin the last few times I’ve picked it up
Metro editor-in-chief Deborah Arthurs has stepped down from the business as staff were told “radical change” is needed to get it on a sustainable footing Executive editor of the free daily newspaper Richard Hartley-Parkinson has also left with immediate effect

Happy to report it was all there - young man has his head turned in Soho by a gangster and a stripper, a bungled wages heist and a despairing father in Elephant & Castle who left a leg behind at El Alamein
There is a whole string of post-war crime novels - often set in a grimy grey downbeat London - best summed up as “who won the bloody war anyway?”. This looks like it could be a classic of the genre
