Burkina Faso pulled the plug on a mosquito trial funded by Bill Gates. Western coverage framed it as a loss for science. Ouagadougou framed it as a sovereignty call.
Target Malaria had been running in the country for more than ten years, with Gates Foundation money behind it.
In August 2025, researchers released 16,000 genetically modified mosquitoes in a village called Souroukoudingan. Eleven days later the government shut the whole programme down.
The raid just before the shutdown says a lot about how the authorities saw it. Judicial police went into the IRSS research institute and searched scientists, including their cars, on the suspicion they might be carrying mosquitoes in their pockets. Offices and labs were sealed and treated as crime scenes.
