Jalas is leaving his Lang’ata parliamentary seat to run for Nairobi’s senatorial seat. Why would he do that? Which position is actually more powerful ,being an MP or being a senator? Running for Senate looks harder. Nairobi is a whole county, so the campaign area is much bigger and needs more money and effort than a single constituency. The people are also more diverse, which makes campaigning more complicated. The salary and allowances for both positions are almost the same. In fact, an MP can sometimes earn more. As an MP, you also control the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), which is about 200 million shillings a year. You have a strong say on how that money is used and on many important national laws. So if the MP seat already has money, influence, and a smaller area to manage, why would someone leave it for the Senate?
