"there's nothing stopping Scotland from being a member of NATO and also totally denuclearise"
An accidentally released document published by a NATO-affiliated body confirmed of a long-held open secret: U.S. nuclear weapons are being stored in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey wapo.st/2jLSZqA
We call on the Scottish Parliament and all parties to condemn the brutality being witnessed in Sudan, committed by the Transitional Military Council against pro-democracy protestors, and for the UK Government to stand up for human rights. #SudanUprising
And that's just before we get to repurposing Faslane naval base 😈

On the 70th anniversary of NATO's founding, we can see for ourselves how the "freedom" it bestowed upon the Libyan people has worked out.

Terrible news for refugees/migrants trapped in detention centres (& everyone in Libya). We still don't know how many died the last time serious conflict broke out in Tripoli, though 1,000s were abandoned without food/water or forced onto unsafe streets. xitter.cf/AFP/status/11138295882…
We'd love to engage with this! (With a particular eye on Swedish and Finnish defence policy 😏 🇸🇪🇫🇮🏴)
So wee thread on my idea of an SNP Nordic Baltic Policy Forum: @SNPNordicBaltic . It strikes me that there is a desire amongst party members to do some decent policy exploration. There is strong interest in the N&B countries in particular and a desire to learn from them.
Only 16% of voters list "Defence and security" as influencing their views on independence. Rather than pursue the failed, discredited doctrines of old, the SNP has more than enough political capital to articulate a new, different vision for a more human international order 🌐🕊️☮️
🔍 The most recent @progressscot poll makes it clear as day what voters care about when it comes to independence for Scotland.

The deadline for amendments to conference is 9am on the 29th of March - please take our amendment to your branches! This is our chance to make sure Scotland isn't dragged into storing nuclear weapons for an extended period of time after independence!

This is how pro-NATO arguments work: raise largely sensible concerns about things like Russian interference and hostility in the Baltics etc. - and then end by counterposing security efforts against the SNP's anti-trident position. Pure sleight-of-hand. scotsman.com/news/opinion/he…

Note also that RAF has been making provocative flights near Russian airspace in Baltic AND Black Sea. Indy Scotland should avoid being sucked into new Cold War. All Europe should be a nuclear free zone. @ScottishCND @SnpCnd
It should worry everyone that Russian naval vessels were able to carry out air defence and counter sabotage exercises in the Moray Firth - just north of RAF Lossiemouth. That they got so close to Scotland’s coastline is a failure of UK defence policy.

While it's positive that such a motion has been accepted, it is our intention to amend the resolution to ensure that our party's longstanding committment to Trident removal is not superseded by a future bid for NATO membership, and that the decision is subject to popular mandate.
