The African Union Protocol on the Right to a Nationality and the Eradication of Statelessness in Africa is a progressive normative framework for ensuring the respect for the right to a nationality and eradication of statelessness in Africa.
However, how responsive is the Protocol to certain gender aspects of nationality and statelessness?
Join us and our friends at @equalitynow as we examine the Gender Responsiveness of the Protocol.

The Black Box: Statelessness and the Hidden Harms of Digital ID
Statelessness affects millions worldwide. It denies individuals the most basic recognition of belonging and often locks them out of education, healthcare, work, and political participation. As digital ID systems expand, they risk transforming these barriers into hardened, invisible borders that embed exclusion into the architecture of recognition itself - deciding who belongs and who does not, who can access services and who remains excluded.
This workshop, convened by the Global Movement Against Statelessness (GMAS) in collaboration with regional statelessness networks takes participants inside the “black box” of digital ID. Like flight recorders, these systems capture and determine critical outcomes while their inner workings remain opaque, and failures only become visible once harm is done. By deconstructing core building blocks of digital ID systems, we will decode what each means for stateless persons and how harms can be anticipated, mitigated, or prevented.
