Bangladesh says it dissolved the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), an institution notorious for enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and torture. But what the new law actually did was transfer RAB’s personnel, buildings, powers and even its records to a new Special Response Battalion (SRB).
After visiting a former RAB secret detention site in Dhaka and hearing directly from a survivor of years of torture, our VP of International Advocacy and Litigation, @AngelitaBaeyens, saw firsthand the traces of these abuses and efforts to conceal the evidence.
Rebranding the RAB as the SRB is not genuine reform. Bangladesh cannot build a rights-respecting security sector by simply giving an abusive institution a new name. Read Angelita’s full op-ed in @NetraNews ⬇️.

NEW: For decades, human rights reporting on the Chittagong Hill Tracts has centred largely on the state. Far less attention, within the region or beyond it, has gone to a second conflict: the killing of hill people by hill people.
