At 20 years old, I ran for public office in one of the most affluent communities in the U.S. Here's what came of it:
12,350 votes & 1 official loss.
Yes, I lost. Not quite the inspiring victory story you might have expected. Thankfully, I don't believe in losing—only learning.
So here’s what I learned:
- Problem-solving at its core
- Coordinating strategic efforts
- Building and leading a team
- Engaging in municipal politics
- Grassroots fundraising
- Public speaking
But most importantly, I learned how to serve my community. Throughout the campaign, I connected with thousands of residents from diverse backgrounds, gaining a deeper understanding of the issues that matter most to them.
And honestly, I can't be too disappointed. Over 1,300 people signed my petition to get on the ballot, we raised $20k+ in small-dollar donations, and I ran beholden to no one except the people I sought to represent.
Many have asked me why I chose to run. The truth? My generation is often labeled as one of complaints and inaction. Sometimes, the change you're looking for is staring back at you in the mirror.
Policy is easy. Politics is hard.

Dinner with an exec/friend at a large national property management company tonight. This person oversees ~150k apartments; access to an insane amount of data.
Current multifamily market in most of the country is worse than S&L, .com bust, or the GFC. Worst they’ve seen.
Class A mostly fine, decent rent growth. However:
- credit scores at class A have gone down meaningfully over the past 3 years.
- more people are paying rent via credit card.
- average bank account balance noticeably lower than even 2 years ago
- class A tenants stretched thin, living beyond their means. 20k comes in, 20k goes out every month.
- starting to see these renters move down a tier
Class B:
- simply too many apartments, we built too much new stuff. Ripple effect is enormous.
- fewer renters tomorrow than today. Same store foot traffic noticeably down year over year. Some markets down 40-50%
- considering dropping rents below $700 a month on some 1beds in major southern markets.
Class C:
- looking at degrading NOI. Rents aren’t growing for a long time, but expenses keep creeping up
- more renters are one missed paycheck away from disaster than they can remember seeing in decades
- tenants aren’t paying rent because they simply don’t have it
- wage growth has not kept up
Lenders:
- some major investment funds, household names, haven’t paid their mortgages in 2-3 years. Banks won’t foreclose because “X is a big client.” Mexican standoff.
- a roof leak gets ignored, becomes water damage, then mold, then a down building. Buildings are rapidly deteriorating as some owners choose cash preservation over funding losses.
- number of pre-foreclosure and REO deals is the highest as a % of total units they can recall.
- data providers know it’s bad, but they’re paid to sell optimism to owners/lenders. So every forecast is “it will probably get a little better next year maybe” and that gets regurgitated at investment committees all over.
I asked “how do you think this ends?”
“Not sure. My gut says slowly then suddenly, and things will get really bad. Been doing this 40 years, you can feel it in the air. But, there’s a chance it’s just a decade of tolerable pain. I’m praying for that.”

Update: just took a bite into my “hot” sandwich and it’s ice cold.
Worst sandwich day ever.
There isn’t a better example of a QSR in decline than @FirehouseSubs.
Despite putting every sandwich competitor (combined) to shame in terms of taste, I can’t think of a pleasant service experience I’ve had at any @FirehouseSubs location in the last 5 years.
First of all — I’m convinced that they hire exclusively from the closest prison.
Anyways, I walked in today to grab a sandwich and there were 15 people standing around, none of which had sandwiches.
The fountain machine also had no ice. Thankfully, an employee (who was lacking gloves) took the initiative of filling my cup with some ice in the back.
I would’ve ordered for delivery, but it’s offered exclusively through their horrendous app, so you’re cajoled into paying $7 as a “delivery fee” pre-tip, and I can imagine the wait time is upwards of 75 minutes — not worth it.
It’s now been 30+ minutes since I ordered my sandwich and I’m still sitting here… waiting for a sandwich.
Do better @FirehouseSubs

The government should absolutely be monitoring the leisure spending of any and all people on welfare.
If you’re on food stamps but are taking Carnival cruises or going out several times a week, you should NOT be receiving a DIME from taxpayers.
So sick of this BS.

Young white guy here. 22% of my income gets stolen from me every year to give welfare to boomers that hate me and foreigners that hate me.
I have not been the beneficiary of a federal or state welfare scheme my entire life. I am not alone. Why am I the villain?
Hardest line I’ve ever heard

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to be considered for the Scottsdale Planning Commission following my formal nomination at the beginning of the month.
While I unfortunately did not receive the necessary votes to be appointed — I look forward to being of continued service to my city in any capacity.
I fully intend to reapply during the next cycle and hope to be appointed then.

One of the biggest downfalls of technology is that there is no room for spontaneous moments in life anymore
People no longer stumble upon a fantastic restaurant by chance, and find a seat without a reservation in advance
People no longer go on dates and build their idea of who a person is from scratch. Everything is pre vetted from a dating app or social media platforms that ruin the mystery
Even when you go outside, the Google or Apple maps is always on. You have a perfect sense of direction at all times. There is no inherent search and discovery involved
While all of these add enormous convenience, it has ruined the sense of mystery in our lives.
Everything is planned, reserved, directed and coordinated. There is no surprise left.
Over time, this leads to a false sense of abundance and an inability to find meaning in things anymore
The uncomfortable reality is that there is only one solution. Reduce your reliance on technology as much as possible. Take random walks without a destination in mind.
Approach people in person and know them without learning what their instagram or LinkedIn looks like
Bring back spontaneity. Plan less. Do and act more with instinct. It is the only way to find meaning in life

Insane that we’re fighting to import welfare recipients supported by US taxpayers. Even more insane, our taxes are being used to fund the lawsuits.
And to top it off, we have lawmakers pushing to increase taxes to offer ever more “free” stuff.
What are we even doing anymore?
