By law, anyone using a rod and line for freshwater fishing in England must buy a rod licence first.
Money from rod licence sales funds vital work to protect and improve England’s fisheries.

ALT Environment Agency fisheries officers carry out a fish survey to count the numbers of different species of fish in a stretch of river. They are wearing waders, walking in a shallow river and pushing equipment along in a small vessel. Lush vegetation grows either side of the river and the trees are in full leaf as it is midsummer, with a patch of blue sky with white clouds visible.

After surveying every night in July, we checked 10,000 fish to establish the health of the fish population on the Thames.
