The Medici ran a monetary order in fifteenth-century Florence. Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici founded the Banco dei Medici in 1397, and by the 1460s the family controlled correspondent banking relationships from London to Constantinople. They held papal accounts, financed the wool trade, and collected taxes on behalf of foreign sovereigns. When Cosimo de' Medici needed political leverage, he called in loans. When he needed a rival neutralized, he cut off credit. The bank was the instrument, and Florence was the laboratory. Their genius was the "lettera di cambio", the bill of exchange, which let them move capital across borders while skirting Church prohibitions on interest. Profit appeared as currency exchange margins, not usury. Technically legal, and economically identical to fractional lending. The Medici held no formal state charter, yet they performed every function modern central banks perform: extending credit to sovereigns, manipulating the effective money supply through deposit multiplication, and setting terms that smaller competitors had to match or abandon. Power without accountability. Profit without competition. The state ratified this arrangement because the Medici financed its wars. Lorenzo de' Medici let branch managers chase bad loans in Bruges and Lyon through the 1470s, and the bank collapsed within a decade of his death in 1492. The credit monopoly consumed itself. Privilege extracted from political connection always does.
