Latino USA host Maria Hinojosa shares the story of Estrella Diamantina González, an undocumented transgender woman and trafficking survivor from Mexico caught up in the United States’ criminal and immigration systems.
This past summer, after serving a nine-year sentence in a Texas men’s prison, Diamantina González was released, but she wasn’t free. She was immediately transferred to an immigration detention facility and then deported.
Hinojosa, who has been reporting on Diamantina González’s ordeal for the last decade, followed her to Mexico in the new audio documentary “Estrella: Bittersweet Freedom for a 'Bad Mexican.'”

🚨 ICE has investigated hundreds of U.S. nonprofits that help people register to vote — and even considered using undercover agents to do so.
It’s part of the Trump administration’s resource-intensive search for an exceptionally rare issue: illegal voting by noncitizens ➡️ demdock.com/4ibEJRh

ICE has been showing up at and near polling places, and voting rights groups say it’s scaring naturalized citizens and immigrant families away from the polls. In one case, voters had to walk through a parking lot where ICE agents had arrested someone to reach the ballot box.
Now voting rights groups are expanding their lawsuit to keep armed federal agents away from the polls.
