🇺🇸 Trump is treating American allies like tourists at an airport: maximize what you can extract now, because tomorrow’s relationship is somebody else’s problem. The recent trade fight with Canada illustrates the approach. Despite nearly $900 billion in annual bilateral trade and deeply integrated energy, automotive and manufacturing supply chains, Washington has imposed new tariffs, Canada has retaliated, and uncertainty over the future of North American trade has returned. Trump’s argument is straightforward: America possesses enormous economic leverage, so use it to extract better terms now, greater access for American businesses, more purchases of American products and greater allied defense spending. But that is not how successful long-term businesses usually operate. A major global brand doesn’t maximize its profit on every individual sale. It maximizes the lifetime value of the customer. Sometimes that means razor-thin margins. Sometimes it means accepting a small loss because reliability, scale and loyalty make the relationship considerably more valuable over decades. American alliances have historically worked in much the same way. Washington has accepted costs and compromises in exchange for something much larger: military bases, intelligence sharing, integrated supply chains, diplomatic support and countries willing to build their security systems around the U.S. Canada is a particularly striking example. The two countries effectively share parts of the same industrial base, exchange enormous quantities of energy and jointly defend North American airspace through NORAD. You can squeeze Canada for another concession today. But if Ottawa responds by diversifying trade, finding alternative suppliers and reducing its dependence on Washington, America may lose something considerably harder to replace than trade income. The same applies across Europe and Asia. Allies do not need to abandon the U.S for American influence to decline. They simply need to stop assuming it will always be there on predictable terms. Once that happens, hedging becomes rational: more independent defense, alternative supply chains, different trading partners and less reliance on Washington. Trump’s approach could therefore win individual negotiations while weakening the network that gives the U.S influence far beyond its own borders. An airport shop can squeeze a tourist because it may never see them again. A superpower doesn’t have that luxury. It needs the same countries to come back tomorrow. Writer: Mhedi

Walz: If trade is so bad with Canada. He was the guy who signed the deal. I think this is how he ran business. He stiffed contractors, he stiffed workers. He doesn't pay his bills. He declares bankruptcy. The one thing is his claim that he's the business president. He is the worst possible business executive that I have ever witnessed

"The USMCA is the fairest, most balanced, and beneficial trade agreement we have ever signed into law.  It’s the best agreement we’ve ever made, and we have others coming." Donald Trump, 2020

Ben Shapiro is an ally of Donald Trump, he was at the joint address in the front row of the gallery clapping. He is also a friend of Canada, may hate Trudeau, but loves this country, he’s visited and had family live here. This was shared with his 9 million FB followers today.

Canadians are done with Trump’s shit. Instead of backing down, they’ve settled on $155B of retaliatory tariffs (on the same day they’ve asked the UK for nuclear guarantees against the US) And here’s the critical part: -Most Canadian imports to the US are raw materials, at preferred prices, that the US doesn’t have other sources for. -Most US exports to Canada are finished products that Canada has other sources for, even if less preferred. -US oil refining is 100% reliant on Canadian processing minerals. -US fertilizer and thus US farming, is reliant on Canadian minerals and potash. When it comes to trade, the unique relationship between Canada and the US means Canada can punch *FAR* above its weight in how its tariffs impact America. You’d rather have $20 of generic Chinese tariffs, than $1 of targeted Canadian ones. If Trump doesn’t back down on this, Canada can continue to tighten the screws. And honestly the political will of Canadians united in hatred of this moment and not wanting to be pushed around, suggests that Canada’s population is far less likely to blink first, when compared to a divided, exhausted and price-gouged American population. In wars we talk about the “defender benefit” in trade wars that holds true as well. Having something worth fighting for and a unified hate of a common enemy is a powerful thing.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemns Trump's 'unjustified' 25% tariffs and says retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion of American goods will take effect at 12:01 AM EST if the U.S. moves forward tonight.

Can someone please explain why @GOtransit only runs a bus from Newmarket/Aurora on Leaf/Jays game nights during rush hour? Third time in past month that the bus is standing room only and the scheduled 40 minute trip is going to take well over an hour! Ridiculous!!!!!
