Cornishman gripped by a fascination of the First and Second World Wars. Endlessly reading the books and visiting the battlefields when I can. Tweeting about it.

Surprised to turn on Radio 4 and find a dramatisation of ‘The Things They Carried’ by Tim O’Brien. Even as fiction it’s one of the best books on the Vietnam War from the perspective of the ‘grunt’. Just last week l put it on a recommended reading list for clients on a Vietnam tour l’m co-leading in Oct-Nov.

Read some great posts today on the anniversary of Néry, though feel compelled to say that a whole Brigade with its mounted regiments fought there, and not just a single battery!

Former Plymouth Argyle and Southend United footballer Sergeant William Sutherland, 2nd Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, was killed in action on this day in 1914. A pre-war soldier recalled to the colours, he has no known grave and is named on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial.

The house of General Penn Symons, 2/24th Regiment of Foot. Not present at Isandhlwana, he went onto be killed at Talana Hill. One of the first to pay the price for hard earned lessons at the hands of the Boer- lessons that would shape the Army that went to war in August 1914.

#onthisday 1922 the Machine Gun Corps was disbanded. Although there were companies and battalions formed as higher level organisation, the basic building block of the infantry branch was the section, each containing two sub-sections of two #VickersMG each.

Every time I stumble upon these images of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst out walking together I feel compelled to share them. I love everything about these images, from the movement to the happiness to the attire. Just wonderful.
