We didn't rewrite the insurance code for Excel. So why are we so eager to rewrite it for AI? I joined @Zinnia to challenge conventional thinking about innovation, regulation & consumer protection. You might be surprised where I land. 🎧 zinnia.com/la-hub/jon-godfre…

New technology. Same consumer protections. North Dakota's new AI Bulletin makes it clear: insurers remain accountable for AI-driven decisions. We can embrace innovation without abandoning oversight. Regulate outcomes, not just technology. insurance.nd.gov/tools-legal…

Are state insurance regulators asleep at the wheel? Recent headlines suggest it. I disagree—and the work happening behind the scenes tells a different story. My response to the critics, and where we still need to improve: realclearpolicy.com/articles…

The state-based system of insurance regulation is not a regulatory gap. It is a strength worth defending. Private credit, affiliated investments, valuation, liquidity and complex structures deserve scrutiny. State regulators should be challenged and the system should keep evolving. But start with the facts, not the premise that there is a regulatory vacuum. Our job is to manage risk, not pretend risk can be eliminated. For policyholders, the question is simple: when you pay premiums, is the promise there when you need it? Changing the address of the regulator does not change the math. Math isn’t political. Risk isn’t political. Solvency isn’t political. Protect policyholders. Understand the risk. Keep evolving. That is the state-based system.

The premium is downstream from the loss. If we want to address the long-term cost of insurance, we have to address the long-term cost of property losses. That means resilience, mitigation and a strong fire service — before the disaster strikes.
Commissioner Godfread addressed insurance affordability during his opening remarks at today’s North Dakota Residential Resiliency Roundtable at the Bismarck Event Center. Learn more here: insurance.nd.gov/news/godfre…

Made my (un)official debut in @NWLbaseball yesterday. But due to some unforeseen coaching decisions by @GovArmstrong, who was the acting coach of the @bismarcklarks I never took the field. Was proud to be part of the team for a short time. Off-season starts today.

Shoutout to the entire @bismarcklarks crew—and especially my hype man @LoganBoertje, who saw the vision and believed in what was possible. Here’s the footage of my BP home run. The camera may have not tracked the ball as it landed, but legends don’t need replay review. ⚾️💣

@NdGodfread signed a 1-day contract with the Ditch Chickens (@bismarcklarks) baseball team! What a bummer that manager @GovArmstrong didn’t send him in… Congrats to the Larks on their win! Godfread had a blast, "Being part of the team.”

Reports say @gregostertag00 may be eyeing the title of tallest elected official in America after winning the mayoral race in @texas @NdGodfread is 6’10” with @GWR, and North Dakota doesn’t hand over titles without receipts, certified measurements, and a very official yardstick.

As my year as @NAIC President comes to a close, I’m proud of the progress we made together—during a demanding year for insurance markets and regulators. 🧵 Spring Mtg: “Every day is crunch time for insurance regulators—because when consumers call us, it’s usually one of the toughest days of their lives.” That reality shaped our work all year. Summer Mtg: “RBC has evolved. It’s no longer just a once-a-year number—it’s a year-round lens into solvency.” The RBC Model Governance Task Force tackled one of the most consequential issues in global insurance regulation—modernizing governance with clarity and discipline. The crown jewel of the year. Fall Mtg: “Our work is rising in visibility, urgency, and impact—and that’s because people are paying attention.” More work remains—but this year showed the strength of the bipartisan, state-based system. Best wishes to Commissioner Scott White as he assumes the presidency, alongside Beth Dwyer, Jon Pike & Michael Wise. #SecuringTomorrow
