ROKS Dokdo (LPH-6111) Spotted with New Radar During Modernization The ROK Navy Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship ROKS Dokdo (LPH-6111), currently undergoing a major modernization program, was recently spotted in news footage covering shark sightings in Busan. The footage appears to show a new Hanwha Systems-developed four-panel fixed AESA radar replacing the ship's original Dutch-made SMART-L radar. The modernization program aims to enhance the ship's surveillance, target-tracking, and overall combat capabilities through upgrades to its combat management system and onboard sensors. youtube.com/watch?v=b6xhrTaK…

ROKS Dokdo (LPH-6111) Undergoes Massive Modernization After 20 Years of Service The ROKS Dokdo (LPH-6111), the Republic of Korea Navy’s lead amphibious assault ship commissioned in 2007, has entered its first major performance enhancement project at HJ Shipbuilding & Construction. The core of this modernization involves replacing aging equipment—including the combat management system, air and navigation radars, Infrared Search and Track (IRST), and Torpedo Acoustic Countermeasure Systems—with state-of-the-art domestic technology. A highlight of this upgrade is the replacement of the existing Dutch-made SMART-L radar with Hanwha Systems’ 4-faced fixed Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, the same advanced system utilized in the Chungnam-class frigates. This transition is expected to increase information processing speeds by 100 times and quintuple the ship's target-handling capacity. Furthermore, the upgrade will significantly improve scalability, reliability, and ease of maintenance, solidifying the Dokdo’s role as the flagship commander of the ROK Navy's mobile fleet.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) on October 26, 2026, advancing a procurement plan first reported in June. According to Indian media reports, the proposed acquisition is estimated at 300–335 units, although the exact quantity has not been officially confirmed. Following previous contracts for 100 units in 2017 and another 100 in 2024, this could bring India's total K9 Vajra-T procurement to approximately 500–535 units, if finalized.
