This is scary
My coworker's mother passed away last November.
She left her modest $190,000 house to him clear and free, no mortgage, completely paid off after thirty years of factory work.
He moved into the home in January to finally settle the estate.
Two weeks ago, a letter arrived from the state Medicaid estate recovery office.
Because his mother spent four months in a rehabilitation facility before she passed, the state quietly slapped a retroactive $114,000 lien against the property title.
He called the state health department, frantic, asking how a hospital stay could bankrupt an inherited home that had no mortgage balance.
The caseworker sighed and told him:
"Federal law requires state programs to claw back healthcare costs from deceased estates. The house cannot be sold or transferred until the balance is cleared in full."
He offered to pay a monthly settlement.
They said no. The full $114,000 is due in 60 days, or they foreclose on the property at a public auction.
A lifetime of working-class savings, wiped out overnight by a retroactive healthcare lien.
You don't own generational wealth.
You're just holding a property title until the state finds a legal mechanism to repossess it the moment you die.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Because the house is worth $190,000 and the average house sale price is over$440,000, the house likely qualifies for the "modest value" exemption. (Check county values)
YOU MUST APPLY FOR THIS WITHIN 60 DAYS OF GETTING THE NOTICE!!!

CAN THE MEDIA BE ANY MORE IMBECILIC!

You know what you know, know what I mean!
ADT wants $520 to replace this adapter to a nest camera because I unplugged it after I noticed it was not sitting right. Because it deal with electricity. I dropped a couple grand three years getting the house updated as I moved to ADT. So since I unplugged it I am told that now in ADT’s eyes I must have ripped it out of the wall and broke it. These companies are all ripoff’s. We take care of the equipment they sold me. Read the fine print. Took a tech rep 1 1/2 hours to figure out how to change the wife password on my front door camera. He had to continually go look stuff up while I twiddled my thumbs. Oh and that’s the guy I supposed to trust to come out and unplug my floodlight cam from the outlet. I’m done.

Black couple doesn't tip at this local cafe, then the owner BANNED THEM FOR LIFE!
This is how you market in 2026.
He lost 2 customers, but gained HUNDREDS!
How do you think he handled it?
“Please do not eat here if you are black.”
The owner of a local cafe holds up the receipt and says that the couple recording paid. Then he tells them they’re not welcome back because they didn’t tip his servers. He names the cafe and tells them to post it.
The people filming are black, so the closer is “you racist or something?”
They stiffed the servers. Then they made the ban about race.

The NFL just released the official training video for hitting Patrick Mahomes.
Step 1: Announce yourself from 15 yards away.
Step 2: Ask permission.
Step 3: Place a memory foam pillow on the grass.
Step 4: Gently lower him like you’re tucking in a toddler.
Step 5: Read him a bedtime story.
Step 6: Still get flagged because you landed with “body weight.”
Chop Robinson tried to follow the rules. He put his hands out. He hit him in the chest. He even tried not to drive him into the turf.
The refs still threw the flag before Mahomes hit the ground.
At this point they’re going to require defenders to carry a mattress and a nightlight.

A Lindsay Clancy supporter was asked whether she'd still support Clancy if she had been shouting the N-word while killing her three children. Her answer? “Probably not.”
Comedian Mike Hammock was performing at Loonees Comedy Corner in Colorado Springs when a Clancy supporter in the audience began shouting at him.
Hammock asked her whether she would still support Clancy if evidence at trial had shown she was shouting the N-word during the killings.
“Probably not,” the woman answered.
Hammock immediately responded: “Probably not, because killing kids is one thing, but that word is, like, a big deal, you know!”
That answer says an awful lot about the twisted thinking surrounding some of the support for Lindsay Clancy. A woman who admittedly killed her three children can still receive sympathy and support, but this supporter says the N-word might have been the dealbreaker.
