I interviewed Alexander De Croo, former Belgian Prime Minister and now UNDP Administrator, on The World Dialogue.
His key message:
“Development is the first line of defence.”
In a world of war, energy shocks and instability, development is not a soft issue. It is security.
2/
One striking comparison:
UNDP estimates around $6 billion is needed to prevent countries from being pushed structurally back into poverty.
The cost of warfare: around $9 billion every week.
The world can afford war.
But hesitates to invest in development.
3/
De Croo also believes globalisation has not collapsed — it is changing form.
Trade will continue, but countries and businesses will now look beyond cost and efficiency.
They will also weigh geopolitical risk, dependency and resilience.
1. After speaking with H.E. Masato Ohtaka, Japan’s Ambassador to Thailand, one thing became clear to me:
energy security and the future of Thailand’s automotive industry are no longer separate questions.
They are becoming one strategic question for Thailand.
6/This matters because EVs use fewer parts than traditional cars.
If Thailand attracts EV factories but loses the depth of its supply chain, local parts makers, engineers, workers and SMEs may be left behind.
Thailand may gain factories, but lose industrial depth.
